I wasn't sure where to post this excellent rant, but this thread seems as appropriate as any.

I know a lot of republicans — not politicians, just ordinary people. They’re not like that. If they saw a neighbor whose kids were hungry, they would get some groceries. Feed the kids. But even though they’re not like that, they talk like that and they vote like that, because they’ve bought in to the propaganda about how deadbeats on food stamps are stealing their money. They got the idea from Faux “news” and they hear it from republican politicians. The truth is, it’s the corporate CEOs who have stolen their money, all the while convincing them that one of our finest government assistance programs — food stamps — is too expensive, but subsidies for oil companies are essential to protect “job creators.” I have a question for the “job creators”: where are the fucking jobs?

That's the thing; I know plenty of kind, decent, and generous people who would literally give you the shirts off their backs if you needed them to do so.

Despite this, they nonetheless insist on voting for fearmongering politicians who openly promote racism, deny science, demonize the poor, and unashamedly promote the interests of the wealthy over those of everyone else.

It never ceases to amaze me that the GOP has been so astonishingly successful at getting people to vote against their own interests.

It's not as if the Democrats are a lot better, but at least, as the linked rant points out, "you don’t hear democrat politicians talk about cutting food stamp benefits" in favor of yet more tax breaks for the wealthy.

Maybe we should wait for a trickle-down, job-creators-need-more-money politician to get ill, and then go and give some medicine to a healthy person, on the basis that it is healthy people who produce good healthcare and invent medicines, so ultimately it will mean that the politician will be better off. You know. Once the judicious application of medicine has trickled through the system.
