Default Dumbian is more like it!

I have been having a series of stupid problems with Debian on my new system. It keeps losing my keyboard and my mouse, and every time I log in, I have to manually create a new profile for my monitor. I'll get it working, reboot, and it just throws me errors saying the profile is unusable, which is fine because so usually are my mouse and/or my keyboard. (Yes, I have tried different USB ports.)

Are any of you guys using Debian and having problems like this, and/or know how to fix it? I've found other internet people having the problem, but none of the suggested solutions work. I'd kind of like to get it actually working, but if it's going to be like this, I'd just as soon switch distros. I've been meaning to get a new SSD, so I'm thinking I might just get it sooner rather than later and do a fresh install on that.

Which leads me to my other question: Which one? I haven't used Ubuntu in a long time, because I really really didn't care for it at least as of a few years ago. It just took too much time and effort to clean up all the bloat. Should I try that again, or something else? I want something widely enough adopted that common problems are documented fairly well, and not by rude neckbeards who just post recursive links to search results.

There is no poll. This is an ESSAY question.

I work with something that mentions Debian and Knoppix when setting up the BIOS, but that comes up in some other thing called Tera Term. In other words, only vaguely familiar that such things exist. Just curious, does it auto find the keyboard, monitor and mouse or do you have to tell it to in BIOS settings, or tell it what to do with USB?

I doubt if I can help you fix the problem, but I could distract you with dumb questions.

No, because :^:

I'm not being very helpful, I guess. Is it the stable version?

When it has found the settings, it auto-found them. I did this thing where I went into the BIOS and changed various settings that I thought might have some remote chance of fixing it, but nothing worked.

(I have a memo to myself here right now that I have USB 3 support turned off and need to turn it back on again next time.)

I meant to install the stable version on this one, but I should go check and make sure I didn't do anything crazy.

I don't want to turn it back on again this minute, though. I'll check that in the morning.

One weird thing is some of the posts I've found about this problem were super-old. Some were newer, but there was one from 2012 and one from 2005, even! Makes me suspect my system, you know. It's just weird that both the USB devices and the monitor are having problems at the same time.

When you have a very generic problem you will get a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with it. I had an issue that was a combination of Wine + nvidia driver + OpenGL = black screen. Try to find something on the internet about "I get a black screen when I do X".

Yeah if it picks up peripherals at first and then acts as if it lost them later maybe hardware problem.

Not using Debian except in the second-hand sense. It's possible that Ubuntu has more hardware handling but I'd be surprised ... anyway, I haven't had problems like you describe. Back in Ubuntu 8 it was quite manual making displays work the way I wanted them. Now, all displays, headsets, mice, keyboards recognised without any hassle.

+1 [thanks] for thrad title ... but yeah it might be a hardware thing.

I won't raise it, but just acknowledge with a slight tip of the head that "try other distros on a live CD/USB" is a standard recommendation at this point.

I still have some PCs running Ubuntu, but mostly I use Linux Mint, which is just Ubuntu with a (IMO) nicer GUI. I tried Debian for a while but didn't like it. Raspberry Pis, of course, run a version of Debian named Raspbian. You can get Raspbian for desktops but I've never tried it.

For the record, there are many interfaces available with store-brand Ubuntu, and I use KDE because the Gnome/Unity options were just a mess.

Yeah, I don't even remember now exactly what all I hated about Ubuntu (I think it was getting bloated or intrusive or something?), but I know it wasn't just the desktop environment. I'm pretty fussy about my desktop, so I've tried a whole bunch of them. I'm pretty happy with Mate right now, with a bunch of tweaks.

I'll still try other ones, though, based on recommendations. But the default desktop is never a deal killer.

Anyway, I got my desktop running again, at least temporarily, so I think I'll just leave it on until I get some new hardware.

And I am still going to put a different OS on my new drive just to see how something else is. And maybe I'll get rid of that CentOS partition I haven't logged into or updated in five years, too.

Can you swap memory sticks? I've had some mb's/sw everything was great, the only thing was that the #1 memory slot had bad memory. When that happens, it doesn't find the minimum peripherals, and no boot. A lot of computers boot as long as slot 1 memory is good, even if there is bad memory in another slot.

Also, if you have a BIOS chip with a battery in it, that might explain

if the battery is depleted.

Sorry if you already know all this.
