Thanks for that. After reading this I dug through their FAQ and found that the only way to prevent your friends from sharing your info with these apps is to block each individual app that Fb is a "partner" with. Right now that's apparently just Microsoft Docs, Pandora and Yelp! but I assume they'll add more (and consequently make the users check the list regularly and manually block the apps to prevent their friends from sharing their information).

This shit should seriously be illegal.
It did say that it would only be sharing information you have set to "public" anyway, so if you have your stuff set to private (or even "friends only") I don't think it would be shared. I could be reading it wrong, but that's what I took from it.

Well, I am certainly glad I do not nor do I ever intend to have a Facebook account. If this is how their treat the privacy rights of their users, I want absolutely nothing to do with them. Their conduct in this situation should be considered illegal.

Facebook is suggesting that I add myself as a friend (so many mutual friends!) but then it says I can't connect to myself. :deepsigh:

I got talked into getting a Facebook account not too long ago, largely because most of my family members have accounts. Supposedly, it's a convenient way to keep in touch. I'm not at all convinced that it's very convenient, but whatever.

Of course, since I think to check the thing only once or twice a week, there's that. It does help me keep up with the nieces and nephews though, as they're obviously far more interested in that sort of thing than I am. Occasionally, one of them will send me a message -- usually asking for school-related advice, as it happens.

I've deliberately put almost no personal information up, and restricted access to that.

I've been surprised at how many high school acquaintances have sent me "friend" requests. (I haven't refused any, but neither have I gone out in search of anyone to "befriend.")

I'd guess that I spend an average of less than an hour per week on Facebook. Evidently, I'm not average in that, though. Every time I log on, I've got requests to play "Mafia" or "Farmville" or whatnot, or to send somebody "Hearts" or whatever the heck that's all about.

At first I sent polite replies saying I really didn't have the time or interest for such things. I've now reached the point where I'm semi-seriously considering putting a big "PLEASE STOP SENDING ME THESE REQUESTS" on my home page.

If it weren't by far the best way to keep up with the doings of my nieces and nephews, I think I'd delete the account.

Cheers,

Michael

You can block things like Farmville and Mafia so you just don't see them. :yup:

If you hover over any of the offending posts a "Hide" button appears in the upper left, click the hide button and then more buttons appear and one will say "Hide Farmville" (for example) If you click that you will not see any Farmville related messages again.

Those games are entertaining for however long it takes you to realize that you're playing Spreadsheet Commander, but it's pretty easy to hide them, like Crumb said.

Unless you're viewing someone else's profile, then you'll see their activity.

Holy shit, we're currently #2 on Google for "spreadsheet commander". I thought it was a fairly common term.

So what is spreadsheet commander? There are some games there where you actually do more than just balance the books if that is what you mean. Like Farmville, which I enjoy.

Yes I even did google first, because I am supremely interested. I have a passion for spreadsheets.

It's just a (fairly common, I thought) derisive term for a game where it's transparently obvious that the core game mechanic is just juggling numbers, as though on a spreadsheet. The various reskinned Mafia Wars, Vampire Wars, Dragon Wars, Whatever Wars games on FB are textbook examples. Many (most?) games involve juggling numbers to some extent, but a Spreadsheet Commander game is one where it's a) a core mechanic and b) transparent to the point of breaking immersion. A game that was actually thematically about number juggling wouldn't be a Spreadsheet Commander game in this sense, b/c the immersion is not broken.

Ok, that's what I was thinking you meant. Yeah there are a lot of those. I don't understand the appeal of them. But there are FB games that are more than just number juggling.
