Default Whats your Fav. Wine?

Dunno if there's one of these threads already, but here's mine.

Me I like a nice dry Merlot. There's a winery in the Amana Colonies that makes this excellent Merlot, that< insert homer noise>. So good.

I'm tired of merlot, haven't had any in a year. I also cut back on my cabernet sauvignon. Lately, it's been shiraz or pinot noir for me. But as long as it's dry and red, I'll drink it.

If I had any on the shelf, I'd be drinking it now. Sigh.

I'm more of a whiskey girl myself, but I do go for the fruit wines. As long as it doesn't actually taste like wine.

Sandrone Barbera d'Alba is my favorite all-purpose red. It can be hard to find, but it's not hugely expensive and it's totally worth it because it has the rare and beautiful property of matching pretty much any meal it accompanies.

I prefer a bold red. A good zinfandel or shiraz, usually. My specific faves have been Eileen Hardy's E&E Black Pepper Shiraz and Marques De Grinon Vadepusa Syrah (spanish) but I've found neither of those in the states (my neck o' the woods isn't the hotbed of wine drinkers). A great, easy-drinking Cabernet that I like is the Screw Kappa Napa.

I am also mostly a whisky/whiskey guy. I think I know what is under the tree from my wife but I'm not sure -- could be that 21 yo Bushmills! If it can hold a candle to the 18 yo Jameson, I'll be pleasantly surprised. (I'm still partial to Scotch whiskies, though)

Grape Kool-Aid and Everclear is as close to wine as I wish to go.

Actually, I have tasted a few that I didn't mind, but I don't like the dry wines nearly as much as the ones that still taste a bit sweet, whatever the color.

It depends. I'm not a big fan of most whites. For an affordable table red, I like Guigal Côtes du Rhône. :winedunk:

For nice occasions, it's hard to go wrong with a Châteauneuf du Pape. :vin:

I can't do reds, either. The tanin taste just kills it for me.

I like a California chardonnay. I vary it, go for different fruits and such, but my absolute favorite is that vanilla oak flavor of Kendall Jackson.

I got a bottle of Carolina Red in the Secret Santa exchange at work. It's made from muscadine grapes (I think I spelled that right) that grow wild in this part of the country. It's a sweet red, that you're supposed to serve chilled. That sounds absolutely barbaric to me, but it's the south I guess, and since sweet and chilled is how I take my white, I am definitely going to give this one a chance.

A dry, slightly fruity Chardonnay.

My new favorite cheap shiraz is Leaping Horse: http://www.leapinghorse.com/

I was paying $5 more for the Bella Sera pinot noir.

Anything really, I haven't found a wine I didn't like. Sadly living on the edge of wine country and I couldn't tell you exactly what I like more than others. Deep pit of hell colored reds are good in small doses.

I like Beaujolais as an every day red (Louis Jadot is consistently good and inexpensive), some Zinfadels, and one particular Cabernet, Liberty School. My very fave red though is Chateau de la Gardine which is the "new vine" variety of Chateuneuf du Pape.

Pretty much dislike whites (except champagne), especially Chardonnays, but I like Evolution which is made form like 9 different grapes I think.

Lately, though, I have been choosing champagne. Dunno why, but it's my first choice at all the holiday parties I have been to.

MD 20/20 (Mad Dog) is the way to go. Nothing else can so quickly turn a ditch and piece of cardboard into choice accomodations.

Seriously, I love all kinds of wine. One thing I've noticed lately is the number of good wines that are coming in a box. Boxed wine used to be for those who valued quantity over quality, but that seems to have changed somewhat. It still doesn't make sense to me though because you've got to let the wine breathe.

Cook's Illustrated found that boxed wines were actually superior cooking wines because they keep for much, much longer than corked wines. You don't even need to refrigerate after opening.

Very true, it will store a lot longer. Plus, I guess you can just pour what you want to drink into a decanter, and let it air out in there.

For reds, I like a nice Chianti. Ruffino Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico is consistently good.

For whites, I like a dry Riesling or Pinot Grigio.

For champagne, I like Veuve Clicquot. For sparkling wine, I like Roederer Estate. Again, both are consistently good.

In a can, I like Sofia Mini.

Sweet wines, like Sauternes, make me :yuck:.

I like sweet wines with unsweet desserts. Vin Santo, for instance, with almond biscotti. The biscotti are hard as rocks until you dip them in the wine, then they make sweet music together.

Moscato d'Asti is my favorite dessert wine. I wouldn't drink it alone, though, 'cause it'd be cloying. It's really meant as an accompaniment.
