Default Internet Relationships

Ok, this might get me shot at, but I have a serious question about this:

How the hell does it possibly work? I mean, how do you really get to know someone you never (or rarely) even see, short of an occasional photograph?

Just seems weird to me, especially the ones that get all serious, like people end up talking about marriage and whatnot.

Granted, it's a lot of fun to get a girl drunk and naked and very ... um, "self-motivated" on a webcam... but I just couldn't see how anything serious could come from this sort of communication... especially when it's so difficult to tell tone and motivation in text.

Not only that, but it seems like there would be a million aspects to a person you'd just never see, and would all hit you at once were you to actually meet the guy/girl in question on the street.

Reason I bring this up: a friend just broke off a rather long one of these, due to how bad things ended up going once they actually met.

How does this shit work anyway?

Got me. I met someone on a business trip last year that I'd been communicating with online for a year or more. He was as sweet in person as he was online ... but his mannerisms and ways of talking turned me totally off.

I'm glad it wasn't a romantic meet-up; that would have been awkward.

I have seen hot and heavy cyber relationships fall apart upon meeting in person, and I have seen them work out and end in marriage/commitment. Guess it's just like any other relationship; sometimes the pieces all fall together-physical, emotional, and the ever mysterious "chemistry"- and you have a lasting relationship....sometimes it don't work

I had roommate many years ago that hooked up with girls he met on AOL. He finally met this girl from Mississippi that cured him of that habit. We called her the Mississippi Mud Queen, which is cruel but you would have to see her to appreiciate the slur. She was hooked on meth, and would drive all the way from MS to East TN in the middle of the night, and start banging of the doors and windows about 4 in the morning. She tried to set up camp in our apartment, and I told my roommate that it was her or me. He was too nutless to kick her out, so I offered to do it for him. This story goes on-and-on, so I'll spare you the details, but the moral is... well, I don't know what the moral is, except don't sleep with an Internet Mud Queen.

There seems to be significant advantages and disadvantages to "online dating".

I'm with LadyShea when she says, "it's just like any other relationship".

A simple note, though: The person you meet online is only one dimensional. You meet the person that they wish they were. That's not much different from dating "in person". But it's harder to see who they truly are when you are consistently only getting a one-sided view.

You can learn a lot from a person by their mannerisms: how they respond and interact with other people, for example. If he/she is intentionally rude to the waitress at your favorite restaurant, or he/she turns into a raving madman when getting cut off in traffic, you can assume that this is how you would be treated when the newness of the relationship wears off.

I am more against it than for it, even though I have a friend who met his fiance through eHarmony.com.

Dunno, it worked for me. Lady Shea is right, so I'll quote for truth:

It was much nicer than meeting a guy in a bar, and it's almost like there's a safety net..if someone creeps you out, it's easier to ignore them on the internet than it is if they frequent the same haunts you do. (mind you, this was the first [and last]time I've ever done the internet dating thing. It didn't even start out that way. Hooray for common intrests!)

The five hour time difference was the killer.

I dated a guy for 4 years that lived in another state; we met online. Like I said, it worked for a good, long while.

I'm doing it again; I've fallen for a guy I know from this very board, and it's hard because he lives in another country--but I think it'll pay off in the end.

You just have to really work for it, and truly love and trust each other.

I met my wife on LOVE@AOL.com. Yep, Im an online dating success story! :yup:

However, the service allows you to restrict people to a certain geographic radius from you residence (I think I put in 50 mile radius). Or at least it did 6 year ago. My wife and I were both living in Houston at the time. Turned out we lived about 15 minutes away from each other.

While I think online dating and similar services are great -hey, it worked for me! I do think that its best to limit the geographic area. Long distance relationships are tough enough. I think the thing that is nice is that you can often check out if the person has similar interests, which I think is an important part of a relationship, particularly starting out. Also, you can start communicating with the person via email, etc., which can often be less intimidating.

I'm sure there are tales of horror about meeting people on the internet, but my own experience meeting people in person that I've met online has been entirely positive. I've met some Infidels and Heathens, some of whom are also FFers. I've met up with people that ride the same kind of motorcycle I do from all over the place after first meeting them on the internet. It's all been good.

Also, my department's computer guru in Salt Lake City met his wife on the internet. As far as I know, they're still together after 10 years.

A female security guard in our Salt Lake City office met a guy online, quit her job and moved halfway across the country to live with him. As far as I know, that worked out quite well too.

you're probably right, that makes a lot of sense...

As for me, I dunno, I guess the idea of having a relationship with someone I can't actually see on a regular basis just weirds me out.

Well, I've had various experiences with online friendship and online romance. I would say that the key thing is to meet someone you think you have a thing for as soon as possible or you may be in for a lot of heartache when that chemistry part goes awry, or when the relationship just vanishes in a puff of smoke because neither one is willing to spend the dough to meet one another or in the meantime another interesting person crossed their path. As far as specific dating services, like say match.com, I don't think it is a bad thing necessarily-- for those of us who don't seem to frequent places where we can meet single eligible folks, it is a good way to get out there and to go on dates with people who are also explicitly looking to date in your area.

I've enhanced a lot of online friendships however, by meeting folks from online in person. It has been very rewarding, rarely frustrating and always interesting!

And what about dating site? Online dating as well as offline dating can be frustrating. And it takes time to find really good person. Right now I'm researching reviews of these sites here. And wondering is there any posibilities to find a wife out there.
