Sigh Well, hell, now I gotta start going to Starbucks

Up to now I've been proud of the fact that I have never darkened the door of a Starbucks establishment. I've drunk their brew when meeting organizers have supplied it for our gatherings but I have never spent my own cash on the stuff.

And then I found this website: Dump Starbucks. The link I supplied takes you to the "why" but it took some digging to find it. I just assumed they want signatures to protest its Evil Corporate Foodstuffs issue or some such.

But no. They want to protest that "it has taken a corporate-wide position that the definition of marriage between one man and one woman should be eliminated and that same-sex marriage should become equally 'normal'." This site claims that Starbucks takes a portion of the money made from each cup of coffee sold to fund "this corporate assault on marriage."

Well, I know where there's a Starbucks. (Doesn't everybody?) I guess I'll have to go in. :(

I also have the impression that Starbucks has tended to take fairly good care of their employees, as American Businesses go. I haven't frequented them much at all either though, but only because it feels to foo foo for my tastes. Maybe I should. Mebbe I'll stop in and say something like "gimme a large coffee plizz" and see what transpires, lol.

What will transpire is that they will try to figure out what you mean by large and by coffee.

Eventually they will try to sell you something that will not taste like coffee.

Yes, I went straight (ha!) to the horse's mouth but the only confirmation I could find was a June newsletter encouraging folks to re-elect Obama because of the same-sex marriage thing or something. I forget exactly.

Anyway, I saw some other things about the corporation that I liked (but because I'm old I disremember) so I guess there are other reasons and stuff to buy from them.

Man, I just hope strip joints don't start supporting causes I believe in. Can you see me frequenting on of those?! (Again?)

Starbucks has long been known to provide good employee benefits, even to part timers, and to not discriminate against women or gays or race in their hiring. I've never felt they were evil, and I like frou-frous once in a while. A nice peppermint mocha was perfect while Christmas shopping at Target, where there is a Starbucks you see.

I enjoy starbucks and find them decent for a food chain. They are friendly to their employies but not always nice as they are know for following the sadly growing practice of hiring many workers on part-time, just under the hours needed to require them to offer benefits.
They do slightly burn their coffee and over sweeten their drinks but are also happy to modify anything into anything else, a lesser known aspect is you can hand them ingredients to add.

I avoid their competition Peets since last year they were bought by a conglomerate corporation that also owns a chemical company responsible for rat poisons which kill small animals and birds damaging the environment.

I'm a pretty big coffee snob, but I never found Starbucks as bad as it's made out to be. I never get lattes or espressos or anything, though, just regular coffee with a little milk and sugar, preferably a darker roast.

Truth and truth. The one we go to most often is one of those little ones that's set up inside a Kroger, and for a Starbucks inside a Kroger in Bumfuck Georgia, the baristas have their shit together. bey used to always have them add an ice cube or two to his coffee and one day the person said, "If you want I can just make it a little cooler so it doesn't get watered down." Genius! Also, since it's in a Kroger, I can go and grab a half-pint of lite egg nog for them to use in my egg nog latte. And they're on the same point-of-sale system as the Kroger, so they'll ring it up for me (or sometimes a bottled water or other small grocery item) and we get Kroger points for all our coffee purchases.

The local coffee place that all the tree-huggers and hipsters want us to use is Jittery Joe's. They're a great local business and they do good stuff in the community and what-not, but their coffee is shit. You think Starbucks is bad about burning the roast? Damn, you don't even know.

Coffee anti-snobbery snobbery was my rationale for never frequenting a Starbucks. Everybody was doin' it so I didn't want to. I mean, it's coffee. The stuff I make for myself every day. Why would I want to fancy it up?

But I'm coming down from (going up to?) my high horse to patronize an establishment that agrees with me politically. And shit.

And I never went to Chick Fil A before I knew about their declaration against same sex marriage, just so you know.

I don't drink coffee, but a friend used to patronize Starbucks. She taught me that Starbucks also sells hot chocolate. As it happens, there's a Starbucks in a nearby supermarket where I sometimes shop. On a cold winter's evening, I'll sometimes pick up a peppermint hot chocolate on the way out.

I think, IIRC, that Starbucks that are inside shops, such as Target here, actually don't have the same employee benefits as regular stand alone Starbucks. The employees there are actually employees of whatever store they're at and get the same benefits as say Target.

It's license to use the Starbucks name that [fill store in here] has bought in on.

I like Starbucks ok. The coffee is pretty good and there's usually one nearby. That's cool that they are advocates for marriage equality, too.

I agree with, Chuck.

Especially when I'm in a city I'm not familiar with, at least I know that the coffee quality at the Starbucks will be fairly consistent with what I get at home.

Yep. There are local coffee places that I like, but there are plenty that are just not very good or are inconvenient. Starbucks is at least a known quantity. Their drip coffees are consistent. (They also have this new Clover thing, with insanely expensive coffee, but they are pretty excellent drinks. And it's kind of fun to watch the machine. Check it out.) I don't typically get espresso drinks unless it's later in the day, but I've found that they vary more, as one would expect.

The other nice thing about Starbucks is that they are typically very efficient in terms of getting the coffee in to your hand. When I worked in a different place, I tried to consistently patronize this one small coffee establishment in the adjacent shopping center. It was cute and the coffee was ok, but jesus christ, it's like every morning they were surprised that a bunch of people showed up just before 8 a.m. trying to get coffee. So I started going to Starbucks instead, and it was faster and the coffee about as good. When I worked in DC, the line would start outside the door, and I don't think I ever had to wait more than 10 minutes.

hmmm...maybe you get better service at starbucks because there is more than just coffee at stake? they need your vote and will work hard to get it!

the little guys are just selling you coffee.

i don't drink coffee, but something tells me the patience of a coffee drinker probably wears thin very fast. i'm sure what seemed like hours waiting for the little guy to serve you was really only a couple of minutes.
