Re: Maps are fun, so is food.
I had occasion to check the spelling of the word quincunx and came across this delightful quincuncial projection world map. It's quincuncial in that the North Pole occupies the centre point and the South Pole occupies all four corners.
Quincuncial.

I have to say "Bangor" and "Essex" are pretty weak as placenames go.

I'm not sure what they were thinking with the US pick. How could they pick Tom Sawyer instead of Huckleberry Finn or To Kill a Mockingbird? That's just silly.

Bleurgh, we got the Diary of Anne Frank? Not exactly part of our literary canon...
But then it's not about the local literature, it's books set there. I guess we got lucky that it's even written in Dutch.

Well, it's books set in that country, not from that country, which strikes me as potentially problematic.

Very much describes Brexit. Now we just swap Mr and Mrs Bennet for Cameron and May.

Arrows for Morocco and Algeria are switched. Sudan not a single country any more.

I mean if there's ever an appropriate place to be pedantic about geography, it's in a map thread on

How do you know it's the arrows that are switched, and not the little labels?

Also, I cannot believe that Big Bone, KY beat out Bald Knob Lick or Big Beaver Lick.

If Canada annexed Cuba, there would be nobody left up there.

Re: Maps are fun, so is food.
Oh, I had the opportunity to go to Honaunau-Napoopoo. But I didn't.
But apparently the name is not technically pronounced or spelled like English "poopoo", it's Hōnaunau-Napoʻopoʻo, with the ʻ being a glottal stop. The ʻokina tends to be left out of US government documents, but Hawaiian road signs and things would include the proper Hawaiian spelling.

I have been to Mary's Igloo. Mary wasn't home.
