I've said it before, but I could almost be on the fence about whether Indian team names and mascots were offensive and degrading. Almost.
But the responses of the fans/owners/etc. to criticism and their treatment of critics definitely proves that's it's just straight up racism.
Fans who claim they're honoring the Indians will turn around and do "war whoops" and other racist imitations, throw insults and even spit on Indian protesters if they criticize their precious team.
Ah yes, professional, high school and college sports are real bastions of gender equality and racial harmony. It's almost like it was a culture or something.

My High School's team name is the Redskins, our colors were red and gold, but don't worry they had a generic Native American in headdress just incase you didn't get it. Looking at their website recent stuff does seem to use the "Mighty reds" instead, which is at least a step removed.
I never found it offensive not just because I'm white like the school was but because no one seemed to do anything hatefully racist connected to it but the name is clearly racist itself. I've heard plenty of arguments for both sides and I found the killer was when you looked a bit further at the argument that "You wouldn't have 'the blackfaces' or 'yellowskins' etc." is that they totally did have all sorts of racist team names in the past like the Darkies, but they have since faded into the past cause someone went "Wait, that's racist!" Which was probably for the best, before the winning TeeBall champions, the 'Niger Whippers' visits the wrong LA pizza parlor.
My high school was the Indians, and I was pretty defensive of it until recently, because of nostalgia and general assholery on my part. Our cross-town rival was the Cowboys and we had a lot of fun with the old "Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys" song. But the band regiment (band, flag team, etc.), which I was a member of, was the Redskin Regiment, and our annual band competition was called the Redskin Rampage. Our head cheerleader wore a big headdress, and we did the chop and the Braves chant, whatever that thing is called. And the last part of our fight song was "Fight! Fight! Go Hart* Go! Bring another scalp back hoooome!" So gross.
* Ironically or not, our school was named for a cowboy.
I have looked at the school website recently, and I can't find anything that directly says "Indians" but they don't have any other mascot name and the colors are still the same. My friend says they still do rampage, but I never asked if they kept the redskin part of the name.
My high school's mascot name was also the Indians, but I don't remember any chopping or scalp hunting. That's possibly because I didn't attend very many of the sort of functions where those things would happen.

We were one of the only high schools in the country with the Orangemen mascot. Other than Syracuse University. I'm not sure where that came from, since most people in the community were Polish, German or some other Eastern European descent. Maybe they hated catholics or the Irish and that was the best they could do.
Our mascot looked like a king in armor so it had to be something to do with the order of Orange, the defeat of James II by William of Orange, or some thing or another out of history's way back machine.
I blame the Dutch.
ETA: Oh and our fan chant was, "Yes, we know we suck." Unfortunately, at the time our school enrollement was like 10 people too many. Which meant our little school played against schools who had more kids graduate each year then we had in the building. Our team tryouts consisted of the coaches begging people to play.

The high school next to our library was the Central Indians. They changed it a few years back and the alumnae, including one of the librarians here, were pissed. I was pretty disgusted with her, but I kept quiet about it to keep peace here. I think they change their name to Cardinals or something, so they could keep the red color. It's closed now, but there's still a sign out front with an Indian head on it, bought by some alumnae who were upset they were losing their excuse to be racist.

We were the Blue Devils, but that didn't stop us being racist as fuck. I may have mentioned this before, but we were Grosse Pointe South and our slogan at games was "The South will rise again" and people brought Confederate flags to the games all the time. When I was in school, in the early Eighties, there was a protest about it from some of the Detroit schools and everyone was all shocked that it would bother them. Hell, there were even some kids at South who had an exact replica of the General Lee from Dukes of Hazzard, with the Dixie horn and everything, who would drive it to the games.
I suppose I don't need to mention how much my alma mater and home town sucked, do I? Truth be told though, we were always more classist than racist, probably still are.

Our local school district is called the Lenape School District. It has four high schools named Lenape, Cherokee, Shawnee, and Seneca. I don't have a clue how to interpret that or assign any real meaning.
