Looks like real action against patent trolling has actually made it as far as being a going concern in the House.

This is actually something I've felt a little conflicted about sometimes. I am firmly on both sides of this issue, because I am large and contain multitudes.

Here's another couple of articles about implanted medical devices.

Patients should be allowed to access data generated by implanted devices.

This second one is less about the open source aspect, and more about the ramifications of having hackable software inside your body in the first place:

LOLOLOLOLOL look at what the USPTO did to the EFF's comments on their guidelines for software patents.

USPTO Demands EFF Censor Its Comments On Patentable Subject Matter | Techdirt

Does anyone remember some thing some years back where some government agency released PDFs of redacted documents where it was just, like, a black rectangle over the censored portions, so you could select that area of text and read it? So functionally, the redacting served as them highlighting the good parts for you?

This is like that. Now even people who wouldn't have cared otherwise are going to be motivated to go read the portions you've highlighted that illustrate your incompetence.

Short version of the parts that hurt the PTO's feelings: So the ruling is, effectively, you can no longer just take some existing business process, append it with 'WITH A COMPUTER' and patent that. But they're still issuing patents for things like that as long as instead of saying 'WITH A COMPUTER,' it says something like, 'programmatically, using an electronic device,' if they're making any distinction at all. So basically, their patent examiners have no idea what they're doing, and do not actually understand what they're issuing patents for.

My farmer cousins all use high-tech John Deere equipment with AutoSteer™, etc. I know of other farmers who have deliberately not bought the technology, more out of not understanding it than because of the proprietary nature of the stuff.

I misparsed "auto-brothel" as some hack that would force cars to drive to participating brothels. Or detect and publicise when related activities are taking place in the back seat.

In fact it's just about spreading disease. Huh.

I could put this in the Google thrad, but I would rather fight about this here. It's at least tangentially related:

Google's Nest closing smart-home company Revolv, bricking devices - Business Insider

This is well and truly The Internet of Shit.

They sell things like this in home improvement stores and such. You think people who buy these devices are made sufficiently aware that the manufacturer can just decide at any time to shut down not just support for them, but their basic functionality? Do the guys at Home Depot inform them of this possibility (eventuality) before they ring up their purchases, you think?

You think news like this will persuade more people of the value of open source? Especially in the Land of the Free*?

Maybe some of the people involved aren't so bad:
Quote:
The closure of Revolv comes as parent company Nest faces its own problems. CEO Tony Fadell's leadership has come under criticism in recent months, with the company "plagued by a string of product problems, employee departures, and disorganization," former employees told Business Insider's Jillian D'Onfro.

Just days ago, news broke that two "key Nest veterans" are leaving, Re/code reported, the latest in a line of departures.

I don't know that they won't make the code open source, which is why I think it's only tangential to the topic. I mean, they might, but the main problem is that they're making 'smart' devices that are connected to the 'cloud' and selling them to people who don't know what either of those things entails.

This is a $300 hub that controls all kinds of systems in your home, they were manufacturing and selling them as of about a year and a half ago, and now they're giving their customers like a month or so to get all their shit together and redo all the stuff they set up in the first place as some means of simplifying their lives.

Eventually, I'm hoping that enough people get burned by this shit that it stops being profitable, at least.

Cool stuff. But the article doesn't discuss, and I can't be bothered to research, why there aren't viable alternative tractor suppliers with more open policies. I'm guessing they have a monopoly built on other reasons.

What is that guy talking about, "free enterprise"?

Free enterprise is the right to sell tractors with restrictive contracts!

Hopefully someone can take advantage of these types of situations to get people to see that regulation is often good and necessary...

Their Bionic Eyes Are Now Obsolete and Unsupported - IEEE Spectrum

That's pretty much the worst case scenario, but it's also pretty much inevitable.

Unless the FDA or someone implements protections to ensure lifelong support for implanted medical devices, this kind of thing will only get worse and more common.

And they'd better hurry, because Elon Musk is not shutting up about brain implants.

VR headsets have been the next exciting thing for about thirty years already. Every incarnation of them, so far, has turned out to be a disappointment.

3D cinema technology has come and gone several times over the last seventy years, and whatever happened to all the 3D televisions people were buying around 2010?
