Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
I’ll hold that this scene is more chilling than anything you’ll find in almost any modern horror, and it owes so much to Douglas Rain’s serene performance.
R.I.P. to a legend.

A more proper headline, "Prolific cameo star and possible alien Stan Lee returns to home planet. Scientists still uncertain if he will return, head attached to cyborg body to destroy humanity. Citizens are informed to alert authorities if they spot a sudden massively reoccurring cameo and/or telekinetic death beams."

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Somewhere, probably on Nathan Rabin's website, someone supposed that the Onion's Walt Kelly would have Stan Lee burning in hell, especially since Kelly has a history of favoring DC comics over Marvel.
Kudos to that person for getting it right:

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Novelist, Screenwriter, and Author of The Princess Bride William Goldman, 1931-2018 | Tor.com
Not mentioned in the headline (though the article does touch on it), but he was also the screenwriter of All the President’s Men. The famous phrase “Follow the money” actually appears to have been his invention; it’s a concise summation of what Deep Throat told Woodward & Bernstein, and appears nowhere in their book nor in any other reporting about the story. Goldman had, of course, numerous other credits to his name as well, many of which were iconic - Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid and the film of The Stepford Wives amongst them. He won Oscars for Butch & Sundance and All the President’s Men.
Another line from All the President’s Men that was probably written by Goldman is this gem, and if there’s a more elegant summation of our current era, I’m unaware of it:
Quote:
Look, forget the myths the media’s created about the White House — the truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.
|
This actually appears a few lines before “Follow the money”, interestingly.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
R.I.P. to Spongebob Squarepants creator Stephen Hillenburg, of ALS, age 57. I wasn’t a huge fan of the show – much like Pokémon, it became a thing after I was outside the target age range, but I respect it for the impact it had. 57 is in general no age at all, though it’s fairly old for someone with ALS (though obviously, Stephen Hawking lived longer).

In the category of "famous but I didn't know about her and should have done"
Lady Trumpington obituary | Politics | The Guardian
Quote:
Jean Trumpington, Lady Trumpington, who has died aged 96, was one of the most recognisable and best known members of the House of Lords, partly because of her long service on the Conservative frontbench but also thanks to her readiness to speak out in a pithy and memorable manner on a huge range of subjects of public interest.

My kids were the right age to enjoy Spongebob, and the adults liked it too.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Same with mine. The first movie came out before the Li'l Puppet was born when the Li'l Puppet was a mere babe, but Mr. SquarePants was still a huge thing throughout her childhood. Being a Millennial (boo-hiss), she probably already knew about this before I caught it on the .
