Skull A-Philly!

Maybe 6 months or a year ago, I was involved in a project at work that I am super proud of and that I am going to shamelessly plug right now:

Grow with Google - Veteran Job Search

Last week, someone messaged me that Google is sending a bunch of veterans to the Army-Navy game in Philadelphia this weekend to promote this thing, and did I want to go?

Duh-doy! So that's happening. I have been to Philly (do they actually call it that?) exactly once in my life. It was on my junior year band trip, we started in New York, ended in Washington, and spent about half a day in Philadelphia in between.

So, what up? Our hotel is extremely downtown so I should be up to my armpits in Ingress portals. Anything else I need to not miss?

Yes, they do call it Philly, fer rilly. Junkies are in Kensington, I don't recommend visiting them. Rowdy bars on South Street. There's always a good variety of music in small fora in Philly. You only have a weekend so probably not a lot of time for the Franklin Institute or the Mann Center. Independence Hall is quaint and quick at this time of year, and it's on the same block with the old American Philosophical Society building. As you know, being the super duper smart ES, philosophical was synonomous with sciencey back then, so I like to visit the building. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Chances are it woud be locked, so all you can do is stand there and look at the outside of the building for a bit. I think the church with Franklin's grave is right down there too. A very popular touristy thing to do is toss a penny on his spot. You can do it from the sidewalk, he's just inside the fence. There is an old wood boat at Penns Landing, which is close to the rowdy bars. Most of that stuff is within a few miles of the stadium. Rittenhouse is a neighborhood with a bunch of old colonial architecture, and I think there are supposed to be some good restauraunts in the neighborhood. The battleship New Jersey is just across the Franklin Bridge. So is Camden, they have a decent aquarium.

That's about all I know. Although I work over there pretty frequently I don't really spend much time poodling around. Im pretty sure there's a lot more to see though.

Other than that there are blocks and blocks of old rowhouses and newer suburban sprawl without a great deal to commend them. Of course there is plenty of urban decay porn, and real estate porn. There are also occasional neighborhoods full of old mansions, some are very dilapidated, others still well maintained.

Also, no need to go all the way to Passayunk for a cheese steak at the two famous joints. Cheese steaks are everywhere. If you like farmers market type places, Reading Terminal has a big one, and it's also in the same general area with the other stuff.

Cheese steaks are the single piece of cultural* knowledge* I have about Philadelphia.

* culturally transmitted
* "knowledge"

In addition to everthing Mr SR71 saided, I think you might like the Mutter Museum. But I don't know how much time you have for any of all that stuff.

Word on the skreet is that the best Philly Cheesesteak is actually in New Jersey, but far enough away that a weekend trip won't grant enough time to get there. As in, it's a half day thing to get there, get it and get out. And that's on top of wonky hours for the joint to boot.

And consider this poste another vote for the Reading Terminal Market.

And if you're of mind, have the time, the historical stuff is worth looking into. (The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall.) You know, cradle of the nation and that jazz.

Music Re: A-Philly!

I did it! I went. It was great, but way too short. Friday and Sunday were travel days, and I was busy most of the day Saturday, so all my free time was at night.

Friday night, walked to Independence Hall area, took photos of Christmas lights en route.

Saturday, tailgate and football at Lincoln Financial Field. I learned that all the Philadelphia sports venues are in the same place, which was kinda neat. Also ESPN College Gameday was there, which was a ton of fun. :biggrin:

Saturday night, I could not deal with drunk idiots trying to get on the Septa, so took a 5-mile walk back to my hotel.

Totally worth it! I discovered Passyunk Ave, with its adorable little alleys that are too small for cars, and everybody's back stoop has their little cafe tables and potted gardens, and it was all lit up for Christmas. :eagersanta:

Then I wasted half of this morning embedding all kinds of awesome pics, but I couldn't figure out how to make them visible to you all, so fuckin click through and look at them. Or don't. Who cares. :mutter:

Hey, Philly! Note: Passyunk is not pronounced pass-yunk or passy-unk. According to Hey Philly! -delphians, it's pash-unk.
