The true perversion, though, is the sense you get that all of this illicitness has been tossed in as a little something for the ladies, out of a justifiable fear, perhaps, that no woman alive would watch otherwise. While I do not doubt that there are women in the world who read books like Mr. Martin’s, I can honestly say that I have never met a single woman who has stood up in indignation at her book club and refused to read the latest from Lorrie Moore unless everyone agreed to “The Hobbit” first. “Game of Thrones” is boy fiction patronizingly turned out to reach the population’s other half.
So, I guess the media's meta-narrative for this month is that we're turning our boys gay and making our girls into manlies.
With thanks to @feliciaday from the tweeterverse for the story.
HAHAHAHA! OMG, you guys! I was google image searching for, like, examples of Harlequin romance covers with swords and castles and strapping men in armor and fantasy/dragon elements, so I could then sarcastically be all like, "Yeah, women are totally not into that kind of shit." But then I found this and I totally lost it.
Help me out. That's Wil Wheaton and who? Christina Hendricks, maybe?
I can't believe nobody has reported their impressions yet. I shall be the first: I thought it was awesome, from the genius steampunky-but-not-too-much game board opening credits to the completely unexpected holy shit ending.
I cannot believe the kid died at the end of the first episode! I knew from various reviews that this show wouldn't be stingy with the deaths of sympathetic characters, but I didn't expect one of them to be the boy, and I certainly didn't expect him to be murdered by the brother in the incestuous doggy-style coupling he just witnessed.
Weirdly, I found myself a little surprised at that gigantic horse Count guy taking the little albino chick so forcefully. I know it was all clearly stipulated by the, um, party and his general taciturn barbarianism, but when he gave her that lovely horse that looked just like her and he said "no" the first couple of times, I thought those were glimmers of sensitivity which would make him turn out to be not quite the brute he seemed at first.
I adore Peter Dinklage and I can tell already Tyrion is going to be a favorite character of mine. On the other hand, that blond boy who appears to be destined for a match with the Stark daughter is going to be a complete prick, isn't he?
You've probably said, but I can't remember: I take it you haven't read the books?
I would really like to watch this, but unless anyone knows a less legit website that's streaming them, or a torrent or something, I'll have to wait until Netflix or something picks it up.

Yes, and yes. Tyrion is a lovable little scoundrel, and you'll just love to hate Joffrey.
Srsly, Kael, seeing the impressions from someone who has not read the books will be very interesting. I'll also refrain from spoiling anything, since I have read the books.
I thought the first episode was very well done. Certainly faithful to the books so far, without being overly so. I loved the set design and costuming, with perhaps the exception of the Kingsguard helmets. They seemed a little too too much, if you know what I mean.
But, the Hound helm...hooboy, that was awesome. How I wish there was a high-end action figure of him.
I thought there might be something going on with that little girl. She was intact, for one thing, while most of the other bodies were in parts, and I wasn't sure those eyes were entirely non-seeing.
I am also looking forward to continuing to experience this through liv's tabula rasa lens, mostly because I get to keep chortling, "Fool, you don't even know!"

Aww, liv, now I feel bad. Zombie girl at the beginning has nothing to do with Bran's fate. I was just being silly. Sorry.
Bran never hits the ground. He's rescued by his dire wolf, one of the rare breeds that can actually sprout wings and fly.

demonoid
And I loved the Hound's armor. I haven't watched it all the way through yet. Homework got in the way.
Oh man, that's a great shot of Arya Stark in GRRM's blog post. She's easily my favorite character.
There's some GoT swag to be gotten from HBO Shop, but I'm not thrilled by any of them. I was at the HBO Shop in NYC last week when they had some of the props there. They had the helm of the Hound and it looks even more impressive in person.
I wasn't expecting Arya's name to be pronounced the way it was. I could have sworn it was supposed to be three syllables but I could only hear two.
Me too, Sharon. But I now love the way her name is pronounced.
I loved it! I think it stayed as true to the books as an adaptation could.
My Mum who hasn't read the books was so into it and made comments throughout to which my brother and I gave each other knowing looks - much like I did to liv's posts.

About that scene....
An important aspect of that scene that got cut from the series is when Khal Drogo (the horse guy) gives Daenerys (albino chick) a loving reach-around. It turns out that all that Targaryen inbreeding resulted in some interesting mutations.
