Re: Return to Gender 101
I am in her district and she used to be my city counsel woman before she went to Austin to kick Rick Perry in the nuts. She has been massively targeted by the state republicans but they just can't stop her.
Fantastic lady, I have seen her move up and up and up and do even better the higher she goes. She maintains some sanity in the state. I would work full time to campaign for her if she were to run for Governor.

Texas Abortion Bill Filibustered By State Senator Wendy Davis Is Dead
Good riddance. Sadly it's probably going to be a game of Whack-A-Mole in Texas with this crap and there's no doubt that similar bills will pop up in other states.
And just because all this shit's interconnected:
Wendy Davis' Texas Senate Seat Was Saved By Voting Rights Act

There rulings were complete bullshit. The you cant get help with a back brace and the sonogram law has nothing to do with this and planned parenthood's budget has nothing to do with this.
Fucking bullshit.
Then of course they voted after midnight.

Re: Return to Gender 101
Also, lets all be aware that the crowd of people there totally helped, by fucking up the roll call.
As per the man's link.
Quote:
Lawmakers had to vote on Senate Bill 5 before the special session's end at 12 a.m. local time. However, more than 400 protesters halted the proceedings 15 minutes before the roll call could be completed with what they called "a people's filibuster," The Associated Press reported.
The crowd of demonstrators in the capitol cried "Shame! Shame!" when Davis' filibuster was halted by Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who ruled that her discussion of mandatory ultrasound testing was off-topic. Then the protesters roared after state Sen. Leticia Van De Putte asked, "At what point must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be recognized over her male colleagues?”
Their cries continued to echo inside the chamber -- and over a livestream watched by thousands around the world -- until after the midnight deadline passed.

Re: Return to Gender 101
My weirdo religious right FB "friend" from Texas just posted some lame picture with the caption "It's morning in America - What civil liberties will our government take away today?" on my page. I commented "I don't know - when does the Texas legislative session start again?"
I think that she hates me now and if I wasn't so lazy I'd find a dancing smiley but I'm getting the sense that she's enjoying our little p/a comment war as much as I am. I just want to see how much it takes for a FB addict to unfriend someone.

To put all this into perspective, here is a map of the current providers in the state. Clinics that would remain open are the five in grey:

So, one could then be required to travel as far as 550 miles (El Paso to San Antonio). It's about the same distance to Colorado Springs from El Paso. It would be about half that distance to go to Albuquerque.

Re: Return to Gender 101
I watched the 1956 movie Ransom! with Glenn Ford and Donna Reed and it was some shit, y'all. Ford and Reed are parents of a son who gets kidnapped. Reed is of course upset when she finds out her son has been kidnapped but she's by no means losing it. That doesn't stop the doctor from basically forcing her to take drugs.
The doctor and Glenn Ford physically hold her down to get her to ingest whatever sedative while she actively protests that she doesn't want to be sedated, that she wants to keep a clear head to stay on top of events. The doctor is all "You must take these pills! FOR GOD'S SAKE, WOMAN, YOU'VE BEEN HIT BY A TRAIN!" She's all "so has my husband." Doc replies "You carried your son inside your body; he didn't." Bam, Valium shoved down her gullet. They all but stroked her throat afterwards to make it go down.
When she doesn't get passive and woozy but instead continues to grill the sheriff and a local reporter (Leslie Nielsen looking flyyyyyyyyyy), the doctor yells at her, "STOP FIGHTING MY SEDATIVE." For reals. She ignores his ass so he takes Glenn Ford aside and tells him to trick her into going upstairs so the doctor can inject with something that will put her to sleep. Ford complies.
Then while his wife is unconscious from the combination of narcotics, Ford decides not to pay the ransom and makes a national televised announcement thereof, telling the kidnappers they would never see a dime of the ransom but if something happened to his son, he would put every penny of that $500,000 as a bounty on their heads. She wakes up to the newspaper headlines of her husband's decision.
It was crazy to see this aspect of the 50s housewife cliche play out so explicitly. Donna Reed is basically brutalized by paternalism.

Re: Return to Gender 101
As I just mentioned elsewhere, I bought The Murder Mystique: Female Killers and Popular Culture on Sunday. I just started it and in the introduction they cite statistics showing that the number and percentage of murders committed by women has reduced significantly since 1976. I had a hunch about a possible reason for that and I found what I was looking for.
According to this timeline of domestic violence the mid-Seventies was when this country started taking domestic violence seriously. 1977 was the first Take Back the Night march, and women started opening shelters right around that time. So, you give women legal protection from violence and they don't resort to murder so often. Who could have predicted that?

Re: Return to Gender 101
Scientific American recently had an interesting murder infographic that noted if a man kills a woman with a gun she's most likely to be his significant other.

I think it is also true that if anyone kills someone with a gun they're most likely to be a family member.

Rob Delaney is a comedian I follow on twitter. He's quite often vulgar, most often completely silly and usually very funny.
He also writes serious pieces sometimes, like this one about depression.
Here he writes a pretty good article for the Guardian about legal abortion.

It sounds like they portrayed that brutalization as brutal too. Is that the case? If so, good, for not whitewashing that shit even in 1956.
