Default Official FTTFaCE Thrad for Talking About e-Readers

We have like six different thrads out there for specific e-readers, but no catch all thrad. This will not do.

This is something I've been wishing they would do since the day I first payed cash money for a glorified text file. I'm a weirdo who loves physical books, but my Kindle is just so much more convenient for actual reading most of the time.

Quote:
After years of false starts, bundling e-books with print books may have gotten the spark it needed Tuesday morning when Amazon announced an October launch date for Kindle MatchBook. Under the program, customers who buy—or have bought—print editions of titles can buy the e-book at prices ranging from $2.99 to free. At launch, Amazon expects to have over 10,000 books in the program, ranging from new books to books that Amazon began selling when it first opened in 1995.
I'm interested to see which publishers get on board.

I am interested also, seeing as how I have boughten tons of print books from Amazon, and my library is spilling everywhere, and some of the paper books are damaged but I want to re-read them, and I sure would like to have the digital copy as well.

Oh, hey, this launched like a week ago. It turns out that of the OMG SO MANY books I have purchased form Amazon over the years, 12 of them are eligible for Matchbook, most of them at the $1.99 price point.

Meh. It's a start. Here's hoping to wider publisher support in the future.

Android smartphone, what's a good reader application? Hopefully free and works with our library's Overdrive e-lending system. I have no fucking clue what I'm going on about with this shit.

I like the Kindle App, and Kindle works well with Overdrive through my middle of nowhere library system, and it's free.

Kindle app is ok. I think I tried a couple of others and was underwhelmed.

I've tried Moon+ Reader, on the strength of it apparently being the preferred reader of the team that maintains Calibre. It's pretty good as well, but I have a slight preference for the Kindle app. I haven't used Moon in a while, and it looks like the interface is a lot different from the last time I tried it (about a year ago), so it might be worth a shot.

ETA: I have read, but never personally verified, that Moon is compatible with Overdrive.

Overdrive is compatible with anything that uses Adobe Digital Editions. They also offer Kindle formatted books. It depends on the book which format is available.
