I'd have just linked the story, but some of these replies are golden.

The only one I didn't see there (might be, didn't read the whole thread): "Sure, it was a beating, but it wasn't a beating beating."

Some jewels were stolen in broad daylight heist from the Al-Thani collection.
I know it's terrible to steal, but I always find myself rooting for the thieves when they pull of something brazen like this. I picture them planning and executing and then disappearing to the South of France.

Re: News Miscellany
Fucking sad that we even have to explain it to Chris Rock. Talks about racism all day, refuses to acknowledge it in Palestine: Letter to world-renowned comedian Chris Rock from the Palestinian performing arts community | BDS Movement
Quote:
As the recent performance by Radiohead, in defiance of Palestinian and international appeals, has lucidly shown, what matters most is not whether artists performing in Tel Aviv support Israel’s grave crimes against the Palestinian people or not but how Israel will irrespectively use their performances to portray a false image for itself, covering up its human rights violations.
Dozens of tweets from Israeli officials and Israel lobby groups, as well as US right-wing pundits, gloated over Radiohead’s decision to violate the cultural boycott, with a leading right-wing Israeli newspaper describing the band’s decision to cross the Palestinian boycott picket line as the best gift of “hasbara [propaganda] Israel has received lately.” Israel, after all, sees “culture as a hasbara tool of the first rank,” as a ranking Israeli official once admitted.

Huge explosion close to al-Qaeda linked training camp in the province of Idlib in Syria where there are often mysterious explosions of al-Qaeda targets, but this is a whole new scale:
Quote:
Over 100 people are reported to have died in the enormous blast, which is considered one of the biggest explosions to ever have it the war-plagued city of Idlib, while at least 100 more people have been injured. While many casualties are militants of HTS and its affiliates, reports have it that also many civilians have been hit by the blast.

Gossip/rumours says al-Qaeda did this to foreign (mostly Uyghur) 'allies' for failing to join them while they are being attacked by Syrian government/regime forces.

Re: News Miscellany
Pakistan ends all military cooperation with US
Quote:
The Pakistani response comes as a reaction to statements by US president Donald Trump on January 1, in which he accused the nation of being a “safe haven to the terrorists”. Trump subsequently also moved on to freeze much of the promised US financial aid to Pakistan, as well as security aid and planned deliveries of military equipment.
Islamabad has however stated that they do not need the US’ financial support, pointing out that the Pakistani war on terror has always mostly been fought with domestic Pakistani funds anyway.

Re: News Miscellany
The Russian airbase of Khmeimim in Western Syria was attacked the other day by 13 dromes. At the same time a US surveillance plane was flying nearby. Some say this is no coincidence.
Quote:
Thirteen sophisticated armed drones with a reach of some 100 kilometers attacked the base at the same time as a U.S. electronic warfare plane was circling off the Syrian coast. The attack was unsuccessful. Russia has sophisticated electronic warfare means and hijacked the command over six of the drones. The other seven were taken down by Russian air defenses.
To claim, as the U.S. does, that ISIS or some "rebels" did this is nonsense. ISIS has made short range weaponized drones flown by remote control in line of sight mode. This attack was by autonomous drones using GPS and barometric sensors to find their way to their targets. This is qualitatively on a whole new level. I doubt that Russia will let this go unanswered. Look out for some "mishap" that may soon hit some U.S. troops or interests abroad.

Re: News Miscellany
On the other hand, I just picked up a quadcopter for 40 euros that has a barometric sensor and a 6-axis accelerometer. A GPS sensor that you can hook up to an Arduino or basically anything costs 10 euros or so.

Yeah, but coordinating 13 of them simultaneously over a long distance might be a stretch.

Re: News Miscellany
I don't think it's that hard. What's hard is to make them good enough to find their way back home or do anything useful when the GPS signal is jammed, which is easy to do because it's so weak. That's probably what happened here (if I had to guess).

Re: News Miscellany
In other miscellaneous news: no war on Iran today:
Quote:
The Associated Press reported Wednesday that President Trump will this week extend relief from nuclear-related economic sanctions on Iran. If it seems like a procedural matter, it is, but it also means in practice that it keeps alive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as the Iran deal is known. Reinstating the sanctions would have but the United States in violation of the agreement. The president must decide every 120 days whether to waive the sanctions
