National paper of record reports that even college students are allowed to rent mid-range apartments in Columbia, Missouri

This is something that might actually be interesting if analyzed as a national (or even regional) phenomenon - for example, is the higher education bubble feeding an off-campus real estate bubble? Of course, it doesn't answer that question at all, since it focuses on like two or three buildings in Columbia, Missouri.

The other question that the article kind of tries to pose is kind of muddled and basically nonsense. This off-campus housing is not on-campus, so the academic result is ______. But off-campus housing is sort of not even close to being new, and the article introduces that narrative without ever really saying anything about it. The primary theme of this article seems to be that in Columbia, Missouri, the off-campus student housing isn't even that shitty. It's just like a normal apartment place where actual human beings might live, even though the tenants are students! (Also, this is the first time I have ever seen the NYT apply the term "luxury" to a $700/month apartment in Missouri; that term is usually reserved for restaurant meals that cost that much, or vacations that cost tens of thousands of dollars, that kind of thing.)

Wild, I know.

The other MIT

But I've been to Springfield a couple of times. It's too close to Arkansas and chocked full of Branson HEE-HAW traffic.

I'm becoming less and less convinced that our politicians are all that much crazier than the ones in other countries are. This seems very undignified for Brits and not at all proper and stuff.

Is Cap'n Crunch really a Captain?

This one is all over the news outlets. The stripes on his uniform sleeve indicate that he holds the rank of Commander. Is he guilty of impersonation a superior officer.

My opinion, for what little it is worth, is that the title, Captain, refers to both a rank and a position. As an officer with a ship under his command he is entitled to the designation of ship's Captain, even though his official rank is Commander. I will, however, defer to our resident naval expert. What say you Ensign Steve?

Captain Crunch sails under his own flag, he could give himself the rank of Admiral and wear Sergeant stripes if he wanted to. I think he's a dread pirate, corrupting the youth of the world, rotting their teeth and giving them diabetes. He answers to no authority.

I believe that what you say is correct, the ranking member of the crew is in comand of the ship in the absence of any superior officer, and is therefore the captain of the ship.

Writing an article for a major publication in which you complain that you don't understand somebody's hobby and assume they are only doing it for attention deserves some kind of Nobel Prize for Curmudgeonry.

Oh, yes! Hello! Here I am with my extremely timely reply.

And you are correct, whoever has command of the ship is its Captain, regardless of the rank he or she wears on his or her sleeve.

Anyway, was the cereal ever called Captain Crunch, or has it always been Cap'n Crunch? Because Cap'n isn't even a real rank. For all we know, it could be short for Cap and Crunch. Lawyered!

Also, thank you Yb and Adem. For a moment I was worried that I was being too sensitive about a topic that is so close to home. (Who, me? Never!)

:unnod: Oh yeah, that's absolutely why I do it.

It sucks getting out of my warm bed at the crack of dawn to hit the pavement in below-freezing temps, but when drivers show their appreciation by honking their car horns at me or shouting blessedly unintelligible words out their windows as they speed by, it makes it all worthwhile.

If he had been complaining about packs of runners taking up entire lanes of the road and everyone acting like that's normal and the drivers are weird for wanting the road* I would have been sympathetic. But he didn't even mention it.

*This is the standard in Flint, year 'round. There is a race in August that is such a big deal that runners are pretty much allowed to hog the road all the damn time.
