I've noticed the pineapple theme in 18th century furniture and architecture before, but didn't understand why it was so popular.





Note: the above building is in Scotland, was built for John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore. The manor had a hothouse on the ground floor, which was used to grow pineapples.

Pineapples were imported from the Caribbean and South America at great expense and relished for the tart sweetness by those that could afford them. For those that couldn't afford to actually eat a pineapple, but had a little money to waste impressing their dinner guests, they could rent one from grocers. Pineapples were a status symbol.

My brother used to work as a sailor and at one point they were shipping a submarine from the Netherlands where it was built to Taiwan which had bought it. I always thought that was a pretty weird thing to be shipping, a ship.

You can ask Van Gogh's ear questions via a microphone in a German museum. The museum has put a copy of Van Gogh's ear on display, made from cells grown using a descendant of his brother Theo's DNA. The artist wanted to use Van Gogh's DNA to make the ear using a 3D printer, but found the DNA sample from an envelope thought to be Van Gogh's was actually from someone else.
