It's either 312 or 412... I'm still waffling on 3/4, but I'm quite certain on 12. Thoughts?

That is exactly how I feel. Waffling on 3/4 and pretty sure on 1, 2

I'm leaning towards 4 slightly, but could be convinced either way. Happy for you to make the call.

1. (land, locale, sea):
2. (green, tree, bitter, head):
3. (path, travel, gum, round):
4. (feeling, ACRONYM, graveyard, black):

steam
socket
monarch

Just putting this here for looking at, don't have time to give it a proper consideration.

I think their code word for 4 could be Mood. That would fit feeling, black, graveyard, and the well known acronym MUD (Multi User Dungeon). If that's right then none of the current clues (steam, socket, monarch) seem to fit very well to me, so I'm looking for permutations of 1 2 3.

Code word 2 could be cabbage or broccoli (yes there are cabbage and broccoli trees) and steam would be the best fit for that.

That leaves socket and monarch to assign to (land, locale, sea) and (path, travel, gum, round). I'm struggling here but the Monarch butterfly is known for its long distance migration, so I'm inclined to put it with the group containing path, travel, and round.

So my current guess would be 2 1 3, but I'm interested to see what the others think.

I agree that steam seems to go best with 2 (still think it's broccoli but cabbage is good too).

I'm having trouble making anything of the rest of them though.

I sort of feel like monarch (as in head of state, not butterfly) goes with 1 somehow, but can't work in how 'sea' fits in there....

Socket... like electrical, or like a body part... I really can't make it work right now. I'll have another look tomorrow morning after Kael chimes in and when I'm not so tired.

It seems to me that 3 must be a word with (at least) two meanings, one that works with path, travel and one that works with gum, round. I cannot come up with anything that works for all of them under 1 meaning.

But then again I can't come up with any word that could be used two ways that fits either.

Or can I? What about orbit? Orbit is a kind of gum, it also fits path, round and travel.

But it doesn't fit any of the clues this round.... More thought required.

Perhaps we should put the current clues to one side and just try to think what their code words could possibly be.

1. (land, locale, sea): district, place, area, terrain
2. (green, tree, bitter, head): broccoli, cabbage
3. (path, travel, gum, round): circulate, move, movement
4. (feeling, ACRONYM, graveyard, black): mood

(3) I'm thinking 'gum' fits with the 'move' type words because you might use it to prevent unwanted movement - but that seems rather a stretch - why 'gum' instead of 'glue'? Also 'round' doesn't fit all that well, so perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree here.

ETA: Crossposted with slim, but yes slim, I think you're right about orbit.

So our current best guesses for their code words are:

1. (something to do with place)
2. broccoli or cabbage
3. orbit
4. mood

Any other ideas?

Monarch might still fit 'orbit' if Limi knows that monarch butterflies make a large, roughly circular migration around the continent of North America (and she also thinks that her team mates would know that).

This could be a stretch, but Monarch airlines has a Mood Food meal box. There are quite a few articles about it online. It's a UK airline though, so not sure anyone would have heard of it (I live here and I've never heard of them!).

This is how far I'm lost on monarch and socket btw

Oh!

"In anatomy, the orbit is the cavity or socket of the skull in which the eye and its appendages are situated"

That means we could be looking at

steam - 2
socket - 3
monarch - 1 or 4

Monarch airlines also went bust last year and even I didn't know about the mood food thing, even though I'm pretty sure I've travelled on Monarch airlines in the past.

Then I think we should go 2, 3, 1 and hope land, locale, sea has some connection to monarch as I don't see how mood would.

Yes, I agree with 2 3 1. Let's see if Kael wants to chime in again after our rapid burst of posting before we make it an official guess though.

ETA: "I am the monarch of the sea" is (apparently) one name of, and a line from, a well-known song from the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera H.M.S. Pinafore.

perhaps 1 could be something like region or territory or something similar that would go with monarch? Anyway, I think best guess is 2, 3, 1 but lets see what Kael says. I've been all over this so much the last hour anything is fitting now :D

I'm on board with 231. Sorry, I feel like the more I look at this one the less certain I am about any of it... but I do agree with your reasoning on 23, with monarch as the wild card. Hopefully next round I'll keep a clearer head.
