Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
What we need now is a Thoughts and Prayers Channel. Sure, it could start out with some religious/spiritual content (to get funding), but quickly move to having actual evidence-based science and constructive help, in the way that Science Channel has moved on from science, History channel moved on from history, and (they did start the fire) MTV moved on from music.

One of those people who influenced my life whose existence I had been unaware of until they passed on:

And James Lipton, dead at 93.
I remember being really surprised a few years ago that he was a good 20 years or so older than I'd thought.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Robert Hardy has died at 91. I knew him best as Sigried Farnon from All Creatures Great and Small, but he's probably better-known from the "Harry Potter" movies. He always struck me as someone who thoroughly enjoyed life.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Jazz Pianist McCoy Tyner, 81
McCoy Tyner was the last surviving member of THE classic John Coltrane Quartet, with Coltrane and Tyner on saxophone and piano respectively, and bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones.
I caught McCoy Tyner in Newport back in the early or mid aughts; I think I posted some pics here at the time but it will take me a little while to find them -- when I do I'll edit them in
That said, McCoy Tyner isn't everyone's cup of tea -- one friend of mine who is a huge jazzhead can't stand his "blocky chord comps clomping around" but I think Tyner was a genius. He kept Coltrane's flights into the stratosphere grounded with a steady root, and his solos were a classic blend of modal blues and avant-garde. The recordings Coltrane made after Tyner left to continue his solo career full time, imho, are too often just abstract noise, all over the place, a sax furiously going nine million miles an hour with no road map or reference points or destination. Without Tyner there, it's mostly just noise. Not that there's anything wrong that -- skronk and sheets of sound are fn wild as shit, but I have to be in a rare mood to listen to an entire Coltrane performance from '66 or '67. It's just too much, even for me. Greg Ginn, Paul Leary, Thurston Moore? They ain't got nothin' on Trane in those last couple of years before the liver cancer took him out...
But even though Tyner went on to do so much more after his time with Coltrane (see below), it was the fact that he had been part of Coltrane's masterpiece A Love Supreme that the press always circled back around to. But with good reason -- just fucking listen to this. It just might be the most sublime piece of music this side of Kind Of Blue.
From Tyner's Pitchfork obit:
Quote:
When asked in 2001 about what he felt was the greatest reward of playing on A Love Supreme, Tyner had this to say:
To put it simply, it was the fact that I played in a great band. Also, the fact that we functioned like one person. It wasn’t like we were four guys on stage doing his own particular kind of thing. In other words, it had to be in relationship to the total. To me, it’s a wonderful way to not only think, but behave. I think to create civility in life and society itself, to think of yourself in relationship to other people. What you do, may effect someone else. We have to be conscious of that, that we don’t function by ourselves. When you get in a situation where everyone is thinking democratically, thinking in terms of what is played and how it affects you and how your response to it affects those around you.

Tyner was the Real McCoy.
"Inner Glimpse" written by Mcoy Tyner -- McCoy Tyner on piano,
Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ron Carter, bass and Elvin Jones on drums
More McCoy Tyner with Freddie Hubbard
McCoy Tyner, Azar Lawrence, Juini Booth and Alphonse Mouzon
at the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival

Amen to that. Needful Things was a stinker, but I still remember Max's delivery of the "Kill them all; let God sort them out" line.

My memories tended toward Flash and Judge Dredd, but of course the point remains.

Thank you!
I kept having flashes of him looking badass in a jacket but I couldn’t remember the film, it’s Judge Dredd. Which is probably a testament to his skills and presence that I remembered him before the rest of the movie.

Now I have to watch Steppenwolf (the film, not the band) for the 487th time.
