I just reached the milestone of 300 followers. I am excited about this because I only had 30 or so from facebook and you guys when I started. I suck at FB and twitter and all that stuff, so it is fun to have a social media site I am actually pretty awesome at. I am a maven!

Despite myself I've become sort of addicted to it. I almost never look at anything that isn't mine or pin anything just for fun but I started to use it as a design tool with customers to select yarns so that they could look at them next to each other and now I'm doing the same thing for my new kitchen. When it comes to blending colors it's great but I wish that I could drop and drag to rearrange things on the board.

I'm sure that Stormfront is behind those pins in the first place. They're always trying to recruit by infiltrating major social sites and directing traffic to their forums, and a lot of those images look like they were targeted directly for Pinterest.

I complained to Pinterest about it a while ago, but they keep just sending me auto messages, so I went ahead and made a board where I can highlight Pinterest's "Best of Stormfront," and I'll keep adding to it slowly until Pinterest decides to ban either me or them:

I like Pinterest as long as I stay in my little bubble, but hoo-boy, is it vacuous sometimes out there in the genpop. I get that it's like a designer pinboard and all, and not exactly designed for discourse, but it's just aggressively stupid sometimes; and they're actively trying to discourage people from actually using comments. (The new site design no longer allows you to search on comments--not even your own.) And a lot of people don't even realize you can click through to the source--they just read the meme or look at the picture or whatever and move along.

So I'm sure that some of the people repinning those pictures have no idea of the context. Still. Come on, people. At least check to see IF something links to something before you implicitly endorse it.

Oop! I forgot about this. It isn't super interesting, just not for social media spaces.

When I first started dating Contra, his best friend was in the process of getting divorced to a woman who shared my name. She was a very destructive person, very manipulative and really toxic. Their social group had all known each other for over fifteen, sixteen years when this all went down.

They were finally becoming free of this woman and were quite happy about that. So anytime anyone mentioned my name there was this jolt of panic and WTF?! Not because of me, but because of her.

GG are my initials, but the first "G" stands for "Good." It would parse into sentences like:

"I'll be sure to let Gina know."
"GG? [Good Gina]"
"Of course!"
"Thank god."

Okay, seriously. Ducks must be the new trend in back yard aviaries because the duck houses I pinned months ago have been getting serious play. Every day they get shared. I pinned a shit ton of awesome pins today and what am I getting repins of? My viral freaking duck house. What is worse, it isn't even the prettiest of the duck houses I have pinned. It is the silly looking one with an expired link that apparently no one can get enough of. I have some mad crazy awesome duck houses from all over the world that no one touches, but that one is circling the world.

So I just got a big fat vomit of auto-recommended pins. I am 90% sure I have disabled this feature before, but they are back, and they have the shittiest recommendation engine ever. Not only do they just dumbly decide that if I've ever pinned the same thing as someone, I probably want to see all their shitty kid craft projects and stupid memes, but they've also recommended me a couple of pins because they share some pins with my board called "None." Which I don't have a board called. So I have, among other things, some Justin Bieber shit on my feed right now. And no. I share no pins with this Justin Bieber board.

Pinterest is really starting to just piss me off more than anything.

AND IT JUST TURNED THAT SHIT ON AGAIN AFTER I TURNED IT OFF AGAIN. JESUS FUCK.

I just checked the settings and it looks like they have launched a new "feature" called Personalize. It uses cookies to track pinnable websites you visit and make recommendations based on that. It looks like it defaulted to "Yes" when they launched it.

I haven't had any issues with it so far. No pins in my feed other than the boards I chose to follow. It might be because I haven't installed the Pin It button on this browser, but probably not. Most likely it is because I added DoNotTrackMe to my browser about a month ago. So it can't see any of that crap to even try to make any recommendations. I went ahead and turned it off in my settings anyway.

The whole "None" board sounds like a big old bug to me. When I have had buggy shit like that before I log out and log back in again. Sometimes it helps.

ETA Be sure to "save settings" over there. I just checked to see if Personalization stayed off after I had already changed it. It hadn't but then I realized I didn't save the changes. Now it is staying off.
