The pond water I collected last night had lots of these colonies of single cells algae, which I thought were Volvox, but now I'm thinking they're some species of Synura. Unfortunately, they were fast moving and hard to focus on, so I got some unusual results.
This is a tiny colony. Ultimately, this is a bad picture which I think looks more interesting than accurate.
And a bigger colony at a higher magnification and even worse results.

I wonder about these colonies and how long I'll see them. I typically see large numbers of these colonies in early spring, but then they're much less prevalent later. Considering that it's supposed to be in the mid-70s all week, I wonder if it'll be too warm too soon for these colonies.
