Game of Thrones is like the best fantasy series ever written, ever...according to most.
However I found it boring. Also, yeah yeah killing off main characters is all fresh and surprising...until it becomes gratuitous. Also, why deeply develop a character that doesn't do anything to further the story, then never even makes another appearance?
Watch now how the fans lynch me This is the one topic that I am all like "Did we read the same books" because people I respect really liked it.
Super-depressing fantasy fiction stuff. He does arguably too good a job of making it clear that this isn't your Tolkien-esque fantasy epic. He likes to kill off characters left and right, and the more sympathetic they are the more likely they are to bite it. It's also extremely graphic and brutally straightforward with warfare, slavery, rape, and other deprivations abounding.
All that said, it is also extremely gripping and compelling. I couldn't put it down all the way through A Feast for Crows, and I'm quite put out that the next one isn't out yet.
Stuff like this makes me wish I had cable. Maybe I'll find it on Hulu or Netflix or something after it comes out though.
ETA: OMG LS is a h8tr. If I still had a signore list you'd have just made it... +

w00t! That's just a new HBO series woot, though. I don't know from Game of Thrones. Can I get a quick rundown of what it's about?
Okay, yeah my nerdy boyfriend hounded me to read this for like years, even though he knows I hate wizards and kings and dragons and all that fagotty crap unless it's Harry Potter. So then I finally broke down and read it and it was truly very good.
Granted I only made it 1.5 books into the series before I got utterly bored and walked away, but they are super long books and that's still pretty good for me considering I don't read anything but Dan Brown.
Ok, I get not enjoying this particular series, I really do. It is long and might be viewed as boring, it's graphic and might be viewed as gratuitous. I disagree, but I get it. This, on the other hand...

This is awesome news. Now if Martin would only finish the damn series. It's been what, five years since Crows now, and still no official release date for Dance?

But you didn't quote the part about Dan Brown? Obviously my taste quite questionable.
Well, I haven't read any of his but The Da Vinci Code, which wasn't stellar, but I enjoyed it. You just can't take it too seriously, and since I usually read crap about elves and hobbits, or space elves and interdimensional daemons, taking my literature too seriously has never really been a problem.

Not that this means anything at all, but I found this on Amazon.
It's not official until he announces it on his blog That said, Barnes & Noble has the same release date announced on their web site, but it's not available to preorder.

Frankly, between "True Blood" (which I don't watch), "Boardwalk Empire" and "Game of Thrones", I think HBO is finally recovering from the end of "The Sopranos" and the stupidity that was the cancellation of "Deadwood"
I've never read the books, but the teaser looks cool. Hopefully, FiOS will be available where I live by the time it comes out so I can have a DVR to record it with.
