Default The War on Easter

For those of you who may not have experienced such cultures, western Christian countries have a widespread tradition of chocolate-egg hunts on and around the religious festival of "Easter". Chocolate, because the west is about nothing if not consumption. Eggs (and the rabbits that, confusingly, are supposed to hide them), because "Easter" co-opted northern-hemisphere spring rituals of rebirth and fertility along with co-opting the idea of their god being resurrected (I got a card through the door the other day informing me that the resurrection is a FACT, so that's settled then.) (Actual hen's eggs, often painted, also form part of this tradition.) And hunt because it's all about the children isn't it? Plus it gets them out of the house while mummy and daddy get into the spring fertility mood and make new babies (which coincidentally could be born around "Christmas").

But I digress. :bunnythrust:

It turns out that well-known chocolate maker Cadbury has been promoting egg hunts in conjunction with Britain's National Trust and omitting the word "Easter" from at least one of the announcements.

Vicar's daughter and unelected Prime Minister of the UK, Theresa May, is outraged: :angrychickenmob:
Theresa May criticises Cadbury over Easter egg hunt - BBC News

Quote:
Her comments come after the Archbishop of York said calling the event the Cadbury Egg Hunt was like "spitting on the grave" of the firm's Christian founder, John Cadbury.

...

Meanwhile, a descendant of John Cadbury pointed out that "as a Quaker, he didn't celebrate Easter".

And the prime minister laid out her credentials on the subject: “I’m not just a vicar’s daughter, I’m a member of the National Trust as well,” she said. “I don’t know what they are thinking about, frankly.”
Cadbury 'War on Easter': Theresa May Goes on Attack | Time.com

Quote:
Did you know there was a war on Easter? Because there is — as I write, fluffy bunnies across Britain are digging trenches and sharpening adorable little bayonets.
May has been silent on many other issues which lay people might have assumed were more significant, but she's PM and we're not!

Non-Christian David Baddiel noted that May made these comments while in Saudi Arabia:

A good summary here - Five things Theresa May seems to think are less important than an Easter Egg hunt

Although facts are so last year, a quick check of the Cadbury and National Trust reveals lots of mentions of Easter.

Meanwhile, while the Christians feel attacked by atheists and secularism, pagans (allegedly...) have this to say:

Beaker Folk of Husborne Crawley: The War on Easter

Quote:
Can all Beaker Folk please note that today is the first day of "Eggmas." It should have been the Spring Eggwinox same as normal, but St Joseph's Day was transferred because Sunday so Eggmas had to be moved as well.

Eggmas is the first day of the year when you are allowed to complain that the word "Easter" is not on Easter eggs.
Quote:
After all, the Easter Egg's been in eggsistence ever since that first Third Monday in Lent when Judas demanded to know why Mary Magdalene was busy pouring molten chocolate into moulds so early.
Quote:
But we've got the chance now once again to get Christianity associated with killjoy hysteria so let's go for it. Complain about the pagan eggs! Blame it on fear of Islamic eggstremism, rampant seggularism or Hen Livingstone.
And from the comments:

Quote:
Breggsit means Breggsit

We have been having skirmishes here too because a big store, HEMA, was accused by the Christian Democrat leader (who was trying to out-populist Wilders as is all the rage now) of caving to teh Moozlims and teh Politically Correct (thereby ignoring the fact that extreme right is the new PC and has been for about 15 years) by naming their chocolate eggs 'verstopeitjes' (hide-eggsies) instead of paaseitjes (Easter-eggsies). It keeps us sharp for the annual guerrilla on Zwarte Piet and War on Christmas.

The commanding general in charge of the War on Easter is that damn Easter Bunny. The Easter Bunny may be a perfectly valid symbol of Spring and fertility but with regard to the celebration of the Resurrection the Easter Bunny is a total fraud. Easter Eggs, also valid symbols of Spring and fertility, having been appropriated as symbols of Jesus' tomb can arguably be said to have at least a marginal relevance to Easter.

Disclaimer: Having been born on an Easter Sunday I have a proprietary interest in maintaining the integrity of Easter.

This explains everything! Eggs smell bad because they are the tomb of christ and when they opened it, it was full of stale farts.

Russian nesting Easter eggs? But I assume, given the name on his shirt, that that guy is Scandinavian. What gives? :freakout:
