President Joe Biden knew he would be risking a backlash from his labor allies if he stepped in to head off a holiday-season rail strike.

But the dangers a strike would pose to the U.S. economy and Americans’ health and safety proved too great as months of talks barreled toward a Dec. 9 deadline with no resolution in sight, White House aides said Tuesday after Biden asked Congress to impose a settlement that left many union supporters angered.

I didn't bring it up. I quoted somebody else bringing it up.

But you know that.

I saw that picket line. In the photo, all ten people looked really excited.

There are of course more than 10 in this photo, and of course not everyone who was there is in the photo.

Is that "well duh" an expression of derision for someone taking you at your word, Shel?

No not at all. Everyone knows that in order to REALLY know if something is true you have to see it for yourself. A photo can not be trusted to present the whole thing nor can a video.

The final result was Taft-Hartley, which did away with highly effective tactics like wildcat strikes, secondary picketing, mass boycotts, closed shops, and union donations to political campaigns. It also authorized states to enact the Orwellianly-titled "right-to-work" laws.

Unfortunately, Truman's veto didn't hold up. Within a week both houses of Congress voted to override. Taft-Hartley thus became the law and American labor never really recovered.

Between you and FX, this place is always good for a chuckle.

Mailchimp tried some union busting:

Mailchimp cancels Pineapple Street Studios podcast after refusing to work with union producers - The Verge

Quote:
Many of the producers who worked on Mailchimp projects in the past, or would take on a new branded series, were in the union. According to staffers present at the meeting, management gave them an ultimatum: sign a side agreement allowing the company to hire non-union contractors, or Mailchimp walks not only from the new series, but from the ads and existing show as well. Two days later at a follow-up meeting, Audacy reiterated that without the agreement, it would lose Mailchimp as a client. But creating a path around the union would defeat the point of organizing in the first place. The union refused to sign, and Mailchimp pulled its business.

Mailchimp was, long ago, basically the email company to recommend if you wanted competent delivery and also people who would refuse to do spam, ban you if you tried to use them for spam, and credibly advise customers on what is or isn't spam.

Then Intuit bought them.

Intuit claims it Was Not Actually About The Union but Intuit is not a company I would trust about anything.

Quote:
In a letter sent to Intuit and Mailchimp on Monday, the union claimed that the decision to cancel their partnership over the labor dispute appears to be “unethical and illegal.” “As we’re sure you’re aware, the National Labor Relations Act protects union activities and prevents employers from discriminating against employees or job applicants based on union status or sympathies,” the letter says.

However, Mailchimp is a client, not an employer. Scott Witlin, a partner at Barnes and Thornburg who focuses on labor law in the entertainment industry, says that Mailchimp is within their rights to make such a demand. “A company can terminate a contract with another company because that subcontractor’s employees have unionized, and it’s not a violation of the law,” Witlin said.
How convenient.

If it's not illegal, it's certainly unethical, or at least really shitty behavior.
