But the comments really make the article. Dig down in there, and you've basically got a whole bunch of scared little technocrats bemoaning the fact that pretty soon, all video games are going to be about menstruation.*
You know it's those "Fuck you, Mom!" guys from that stupid vo tech school ad. For reals, people working in a creative industry who cannot even imagine anything beyond the status quo. No wonder they're so scared and defensive.

Rock Paper Shotgun has a response to it, too:
#1ReasonWhy We Are All Responsible | Rock, Paper, Shotgun
Quote:
I mean, I know I’ve been there. I’m a straight white male who obsesses over and works in an industry that’s been tailor-made to cater to my every taste, fantasy, and preference. I try to at least understand what my female friends – whether they create games, market them, or enjoy them as a hobby – have had to put up with, but it’s simply not possible for someone in my position to get the full picture. Women deal with being treated like outsiders or objects or even The Enemy on a daily basis – in ways both large and small. Meanwhile, this industry grew up with me. It’s my best friend, and it acts like it. But we’re not little kids pretending to be woefully slow, childhood-obesity-ridden Sonic The Hedgehogs fleeing from girls anymore. It’s time to learn some goddamn manners and get up to speed with adult society.
|
This is one thing in particular that I think is important to understand. For a privilege denying dude, life is static and sheltered. Things might seem like they're made for you right now, but ultimately, it's making you dull and rigid and completely unprepared for change. So these guys, the ones saying, "Oh, well. Not my problem! That's just the way things are!" are setting themselves up for lives as technocrats and functionaries, taking orders from people who actually have ideas.
They're right to be scared.

Jesus Christ smoking a cigar on a birch bark canoe, women don't like to talk about menstruation (hell most of them refer to it in some non-specific euphemism) to the point where as a medical practitioner it's nearly impossible to get any reliable data about that when it's relevant, I CAN'T IMAGINE PLAYING A GAME BASED ON IT.
But it might just be a really good idea.......DAMN IT. SCOOPED AGAIN!

Re: Return to Gender 101
Here are a few interesting consumer stories.
This is a fun story about someone who helped a friend find his stolen bike.
This guy points out that, in the olden days, an average middle class worker could expect to be able to afford a nice late model car, but the economic climate has chilled to the point that it's now much more difficult.
And here's a cute piece about how users of a popular children's website have created a meme they're using to brainstorm their ideal gaming console, which could help manufacturers better gauge consumer interests.

Re: Return to Gender 101
Woman Pays for Reporting a Rape : Ms. Magazine Blog
Quote:
In 2008, an 18-year-old woman in Washington State reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted. But they didn’t believe her. Lynnwood Police Chief Steve Jensen said that her story changed, her details were inconsistent and that people who knew the victim expressed doubts about her story.
So the police charged her with false reporting, and she pleaded guilty under a deal that included a fine of $500. The charge remains on her record.
Three years later, Marc O’Leary was arrested in Colorado for charges of sexual assault, kidnapping, burglary and felony menacing. He is being held on $5 million bail. When the police raided O’Leary’s home earlier this month, they found photos of his victims.
The 18-year-old woman from Washington was in those photographs.
...
Police are saying that the Washington woman’s case has “strong similarities” to the cases O’Leary is being charged with in Colorado. They have reopened her case, reimbursed her $500 and are working on getting her record expunged.
And that’s all.
There is little data about what percentage of rape reports are intentionally false–studies that do exist have small sample sizes and non-representative samples. But it shouldn’t matter. When a woman goes to the police with a rape allegation, her complaint should be taken seriously and investigated fully. Charging women with false reporting does not discourage false rape allegations–it discourages ALL rape allegations. The courage it takes to report a rape is unimaginable—that’s why most rapes go unreported. This teenager had the guts to go to the police and tell her story, and they didn’t just dismiss her but accuse her. What kind of signal does that send to victims of rape?

I can't even imagine what kind of madness it must have been for her to have to plead guilty to false reporting. Her sentence included mandatory counseling. Did she have to lie to the therapist and pretend not to have been raped just to get through the terms of her plea bargain? Nightmare from hell.

Re: Return to Gender 101
What is this fallacy called? It's seems a comparison error, but I'd like to know the formal name. Dawkins used it too.
Articles: The Worldwide 'War on Women'
Quote:
American women have now been esteemed to such a level that for taking a stand against religious liberty and becoming the nation's contraceptive cover girl, Sandra Fluke is actually being considered as TIME magazine's Person of the Year.
Women who commiserate with Sandra likely view themselves as also suffering the hammers of hell here in the misogynist war zone called America. After all, American women have withstood the abuse and pain of living thus far without the benefit of free contraceptives. Now, however, equipped with newfound fame and with the re-election of Barack Obama signifying a battle won, maybe Ms. Fluke can now branch out and become an international spokesperson on how women around the world can stand strong in the face of male-imposed tyranny.
Who better than Sandra to represent injustices such as a 15-year-old girl being beheaded by a male cousin over a rejected marriage proposal?

I don't know if it has a name, but yeah you see this all the time in arguments about women's rights and such. "A is bad." "Well B is way worse so you should STFU about A." I've also been accused of making this argument myself on the topic of gay marriage, when I pointed out that divorce rates, celebrity marriages, and reality TV do a pretty good job shitting on any idea of "sanctity" in marriage.

Re: Return to Gender 101
Well "marriage sanctity" is their stupid argument, so you can be excused for saying "WTF sanctity?" I think that's a fair comparison...actual marriage in the US v. the idealized version of marriage in the US that doesn't even exist.
Comparing our lives in the US to the lives of people in Saudi Arabia isn't a fair comparison, because we don't live there.

Re: Return to Gender 101
Some form of conflation or equivocation maybe? It's an attempt to de-legitimize more than compare. They're trying to say that because Sandra Fluke isn't flying down to Saudi Arabia to protest their considerably worse treatment of women, or at least mentioning it every time she speaks, she is somehow not a legitimate champion of women's rights here in the States. It's more like "A is bad." "B is worse, and you haven't been a tireless champion against and vocal opponent of B, so you have no standing to complain about A."
They're also still kicking around the false narrative that this has fuck-all to do with religious liberties, I could stand to see that die a quick, painful death.

Re: Return to Gender 101
I think it's relative privation.
It's such a flimsy argument, too, because you can pretty much always say, "Oh, well, since things are so bad, why are you just sitting around complaining about this instead of doing something about that?"
They also need to stop lying about that 'free contraceptives' thing. It's an industry regulation, so you're not getting free contraceptives with your health insurance any more than you're getting free seatbelts when you buy a car.
Here is another thing about that tactic from that wiki Ymir's blood likes to link to. I am surprised I beat him to linking this!
