Naomi Klein.

Naomi Klein: How big tech plans to profit from the pandemic | News | The Guardian

No real surprises, but some less than pleasant reminders.

She covers quite a lot, but focuses on Cuomo and New York state and Eric Schmidt
Quote:
who joined the governor’s briefing to announce that he will be heading up a panel to reimagine New York state’s post-Covid reality, with an emphasis on permanently integrating technology into every aspect of civic life.
Lots about earlier ("That was the ancient past, also known as February.") talk from Schmidt about China getting the lead in all this AI tech-everywhere stuff and laying out his case for lots and lots of government money and freedom from regulation.

A pizzeria owner made money buying his own $24 pizzas from DoorDash for $16 - The Verge

Quote:
Yesterday, Ranjan Roy, a content strategist and writer, wrote about the latter in his newsletter The Margins; one of his friends who owns a few pizza restaurants suddenly got an influx of customers complaining about delivery when the restaurants didn’t offer delivery. “He realized that a delivery option had mysteriously appeared on their company’s Google Listing. The delivery option was created by Doordash,” Roy wrote.

Apparently, this is one way that DoorDash does customer acquisition — by bullying restaurants. But what’s funnier about Roy’s friend’s problem (and it was a real problem because of Yelp reviews and angry customers) is that DoorDash priced the pizzas incorrectly. “A pizza that he charged $24 for was listed as $16 by Doordash,” emphasis Roy’s. And then: “My third thought: Cue the Wall Street trader in me…..ARBITRAGE!!!!”

And so the story unfolds. “If someone could pay Doordash $16 a pizza, and Doordash would pay his restaurant $24 a pizza, then he should clearly just order pizzas himself via Doordash, all day long.

Windows sure made a number of attempts to make it hard to use anything but Edge today. I even resorted to the Task Manager to kill one of them.

Geek dad FTW - I replaced the LCD screen on my daughter's laptop tonight. Lenovo actually has remove and replace videos that I followed to do it, so it's not really anything too difficult, and it saved me from having to get her a new laptop, considering this one is only a little over a year old.

Epic vs Apple the fortnite showdown (also google’s involved too).
CBS News: Epic sues apple and google after removal of fortnite from their app stores.

It would appear that any app that even mentions they have a subscription service in their app, without giving apple a 30% cut of that service, will be banned from the app store. A lot of developers have been calling bullshit on the fact that apple thinks that just mentioning in your app about other services should give them a 30% cut of those services, and Epic games creator of Fortnite decided to step up to batt.

Epic sells season passes in Fortnite that unlock cosmetics for completing challenges, and apple used to get a 30% cut of every pass sold through the iphone app. Epic decided to challenge this by including an in app ad that not only mentions the ability to sign up at their site, but also points out how it’s cheaper because they don’t have to pay apple for a service apple wasn’t providing anyway (apple has no connection to the season battle pass besides that fortnite was on the app store.) This of course pissed apple off quite a bit, being rightfully blamed for making fortnite more expensive.

Apple (and google, they’re here too) both pulled Fortnite off the app stores for this violation and Epic immediately sued.

As of now this means anyone with the latest version of fortnite mobile can still play but with no new large updates, and new players can’t join. This was smart of Epic as fortnite was a success on PC first, so this isn’t hurting all their players, only mobile, and even then it’s not a devastating blow to their mobile department’s finances as they have investments in at least two other top battle royale mobile games.

This should get interesting, Epic games isn’t a small company but the maker and licenser of the unreal game engine, with the megagiant corporation tencent owning a minority share in the company, so they are primed to be able to take on apple and google without shooting themselves in the foot.

Haha it gets even better!

Epic having planned this released an in-game trailer parodying apple’s 1984 commercial while at the same time telling players their next season will go on with or without mobile, so if you don’t want to miss out on all the exciting new content, tell apple how you feel today!

Epic Games' Fortnite '1984' parody turns Apple into Big Brother | Ad Age

Apple in response has warned Epic games that their entire developer account will be terminated at the end of the month. This means Epic will lose access to tools used to develop and update the unreal engine on iOS and MacOS. Punishing not just the whole company for their Fortnite antics but also every other iOS app that uses the Unreal engine even if they pay apple’s 30% protection fee.

Tencent is absolutely going to back Epic here (and may be part of the reason apple is retaliating) as they make many other mobile games, some of which use the Unreal engine, but who all play nicely with apple’s 30% rate, so far. (Yes, if you are literally Microsoft apple will give you a deal at 15%, but otherwise there’s no negotiating the cut.)

In general I could see this stifling the gaming market on iOS (screwing gaming over a spat seems to be a tradition at this point for apple). The licensing agreement has already stifled iOS apps in general with developers finally coming out and saying their inability to pay apple 30% and make a profit is why their iOS app sucks compared to desktop.

Apple cuts off Epic from its tools, endangering future Unreal Engine projects on iOS and Mac - The Washington Post

In addition Apple’s license is even more restrictive than I thought, I had presumed listing Fortnite at a lower price on their site was just a dig at apple, but it turns out it’s against their terms, as not only do they take 30% of your sales, you aren’t allowed to offer the service for cheaper elsewhere, the app store must always have the lowest price.

(And yes this could all go in the fuck apple thread, cause fuck apple, but it does have far reaching implications in app store policies).
