I bought a house in S. Austin a few weeks ago and my employer rewarded me with termination. I'm a little nervous because I don't have much money banked, but I also have a particular set of skills that makes me a nightmare to people like... sorry, Liam moment. Let's just say I'm confident in my current marketability.

My dad's partner of the last eight years or so died this morning at their home in Bend, Oregon. She suffered a stroke last week and never fully regained consciousness. Shirley had quadruple heart bypass surgery about six or seven years ago, after which the cardio doc told her she probably had five years to live. Shirley was 86 years old or so.

Dad will be 85 in June, and still in good health. He may outlive me. I hope Shirley thought enough of my dad to make sure he would be supported in a similar fashion as she has while alive. He cannot afford rent on their house on his own. My sister says the widows at their church are lined up to take Shirley's place, so he may not need much help. Dad isn't good at being alone, so he'll probably be with someone else within a year, just like he did after Mom died in 2008.

Dad met another woman (also with health problems) on an internet seniors dating site, moved to Melbourne, Florida to live with her. He was living with my sister out there and just basically abandoned her with the task of disposing of all the crap he had been hoarding. Before that though, he was proposing marriage to this Florida woman before he had even met her in person. Sister Two convinced him to at least meet her in person first. He flew down to Florida. He had his Jeep and personal effects shipped down. Dad doesn't know how to be alone. Me, I would have no problem being alone. Dad has nearly completely cut off communications with the family. It's like he's trying to erase the past. That said, he did come and visit us in October. There is nothing wrong with his mind, he is still sharp and witty. Dad just wants to forget the love of his life who died in 2008. The woman in the original post, he told me he didn't love her, but like her companionship. Plus she, being a cardiac bypass patient was needy despite being wealthy. Dad inherited $40,000, to be paid out over 10 years. The Florida woman is needy too, but is not rich but has a high retirement income from being a corporate executive for 30+ years.

I sold my house and car and moved to an apartment in downtown Austin. My intention for this year is to be all about walking, busses and Lyft's to move about the world.

I also lost one of my sisters over the holiday. I might have mentioned that one of my nephews died by suicide six years ago in early December. This year his mother suffered "sudden cardiac death" the day after Christmas. All her siblings, her husband, kids and their significant others, and a couple of her husband's sisters spent the whole day in the hospital as the doctors tried unsuccessfully to save her life.

This whole experience has convinced me that I have undervalued being present to my family, so I've decided to move back to Michigan when my lease is up. For the first time in my life I think I can honestly say I love my family more than I hate the cold, which is saying something.

It's been weird for me, lately, too.
Went to Georgia for a memorial for my uncle, whose death now leaves my mom's youngest sister the only living member of her genration in the family.
As I was on the way to the airport to go home, I got a call from sister.
Our baby brother was in hospital with liver failure (result of too much cheap beer.) We only found out because one of the nurses saw his phone light up when Sis texted him trying to find out what he was doing.
We flew to St Paul to get him set up in a hospice, and sat with him for a week, until he left us. He snuck off when we stepped out to get some lunch.
It also looks like we get to spend the winter in Colorado, instead of playing Snowbirds in Arizona.

Long :tldr:

I was laid off March 17 with a callback date of June 17.

Last week my big boss, the GM, texted me and asked me to drop by for a chat. On Saturday he asked if I was interested in coming back in a different capacity as they couldn't justify my old position in the current climate.

He told me to think about it and let him know him today.

So today, HR called me and fired me, read me a canned script " we regret to inform you...." etc

Soooooo just to fuck with them I texted my boss and accepted the position, graciously thanking him for the opportunity and that I was looking forward to being back with the team.

Now I just waiting. :chin:

I moved back to Michigan in December 2020 and I've been renting a house in Ann Arbor since January. My semi-retired sister is trying to figure out what to do with her life (now that her kids are all adults) and thus has been living with me since February. Since she has some decent savings and I have an income, we decided to buy a house together (closed a couple weeks ago) and now we're working on painting it and having new flooring installed to prepare for move-in, which should happen before the end of the year.

I explained my favorite part of the purchase in a previous post.

Kävin tänään Suomen konsulaattissa Lontoossa. Minulla on nyt Suomen oleskelulupa.

I visited the Finnish Consulate in London today. I now have a Finnish residence permit.

Off to bother Miisa!
