The setlist

Pics, courtesy of bassist Tony Levin

The first set was great, to be sure, but the second set and the encores may well be the best live music I've ever witnessed. Jesus may take me now, for I have seen Robert Fripp perform in person!

You were quite right about Harrison, although he was mainly part of a finely tuned three-man drumming machine and didn't fully cut loose until the drum solo toward the end of 21st Century Schizoid Man. Spectacular. Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've seen a drum solo built into the last song of a show.

I lubs be some multi-instrumentalists, and these guys didn't disappoint. I was sitting there admiring the keyboard player's piano work on Fallen Angel when I noticed that it actually the new drummer, Jeremy Stacey.

Jakko is the real deal. I was impressed with his voice on those YouTube vids, but handled at least as much of the guitar work as Fripp.

For me, Mel Collins was the star of the show. Dude worked his ass off for over three hours playing more different types of flutes and saxes than I could keep track of, and if anything was stronger at the end than he was at the beginning.

The other day I was carrying two 5-gallon carboys full of drinking water in from the porch, one in each hand, about 85 pounds total. I thought to myself, this is approximately the amount of weight I've lost since January. OMG, I was carrying around this much weight? How did I even do it?

The outside drain was blocked. (By plastic bags, so total blockage but easily cleared.)

Matlock and I went to see Beck with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band last night at Red Rocks. The show was excellent. I was worried Matlock wouldn't care for it much, but then he did!

Highlights were Wow, which yeah, is kind of a dumb song and all, but it's also pretty great and even better live; plus the most drawn out, absurd, all over the place Where It's At, incorporating extended band member introductions with solos.

I was hoping he'd do Debra, but I'm thinking maybe he just can't get his voice to do that anymore. RIP, Debra. And your sister Jenny.

It was a great show, though, and ha ha, we saw Beck last night and you probably didn't.

Thing is, though, Matlock had never been to Red Rocks before, and I hadn't gone in a long, long time, so I was an extremely poor consumer of parking. We ended up getting directed to park along the side of this little dirt road, from where we had to basically CLIMB A FUCKING MOUNTAIN, after which we reached this seemingly endless, uneven staircase wending its way up the rocks, and we get to the top finally, and then and only then do we reach...the parking lot. One of the further out parking lots at that. From which we have to get on another set of staircases, wending its way over and through these rock outcroppings, which of course means you go up both ways.

Which, yeah, I hadn't been there in a long time and didn't remember the parking logistics, and not only am I older and fatter now so noticing it a lot more because of that, but I am also right now having hardcore plantar fascitis, so after walking on a hard surface for just a few minutes, it goes from the normal dull throbbing to feeling like I'm getting stabbed in the soles of my feet.

So that sucked, but the show was great and next time, we will remember how to go to Red Rocks better.

PS to Matlock, was the song you liked best E-Pro? The na-na na-na-na-na na-na one?

That was was the most awesomely train-wreckish encore of all time! Beck and his band (which is through-and-through superb, btw) came back on stage. Beck then brought out the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to join them. They broke into Where It's At, but Beck shut that down after a few seconds in favor of Sexx Laws.

After completing Sexx Laws, the two bands combined on an outstanding rendition of Where It's At. Then it was time to introduce Beck's band, with members getting a little showcase featuring snippets of other people's songs that I hadn't heard in years (Chic's Good Times for the bass player, Bowie's China Girl for the lead guitarist, the B-52s' Rock Lobster for the three backup singers/multi-instrumentalists), Gary Numan's Cars for the keyboard player, and Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight for the drummer, although that became a full-on drum solo in very short order).

At that point they all had us sing Happy Birthday to Charlie Gabriel, the 85-year-old lead sax player of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, followed with even more Where It's At and culminating with a collective bow at the front of the stage featuring all fifteen musicians.

Great, great stuff.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is basically the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes of traditional New Orleans style jazz -- people come and go over the years and decades, but the institution perseveres. I have no idea how past incarnations have sounded, but the current lineup (drums, acoustic upright bass, electric piano, two saxes, trumpet and trombone) is spectacular.

If the setlist I saw today is correct, then yes. Also Dreams.

Yeah. As I'm sure you can imagine, that was an issue for me too, but by the time I found that out about him, I already really liked his music, so instead I became an apologist. I guess his parents raised him as a Scientologist, and he's supposedly not really active or anything. I hope he's not giving them a bunch of money or anything, but I just can't do boycotts consistently for things like that. I would have to boycott too many things.

One of my favorite authors was pals with Hitler and gave his Nobel Prize for Literature to Joseph Goebbels, so I dunno. That, I wouldn't buy his books if he were alive. Beck, eh.

Yeah, it's just a thing that makes you go "Hm."

Like when Prince was in his Jehovah's Witness phase. Which I guess might never have ended, but he at least relaxed about not performing any "sexy" music later.

Roughly a month after being let go from my previous job, I got another one. And my ungrateful ass was all, "What? I don't get as much time off this go-round? This bites!"

Anyway, I like it so far. This is the first time since I moved to Tennessee last century that my employment is in the same county as my home.

Until today I haven't posted since last September. I could almost write a novel about the last year, but let's not. I'm working again, and I move heavy shit on a dock all day. I'm in the best shape of my life, although I get aches and pains in places I didn't know I had until now. Two years ago I was a fat cab driver in Albany.

Now, I can throw 200 pound objects into a rack two feet above my head.

If I could just get a right shoulder that wasn't crap...

Congratulations on the weight loss. I definitely wouldn't have been able to lift those carboys one handed. I'd have to lift one at a time.

Welcome back to the forums, Megatron. Hopefully, you still have your fellow Decepticons in line.

Honestly when people say Megatron these days, I forget they're talking about me. This is the only place left where I use this name, and has been for at least five years. I use Kane or Fenrir pretty much everywhere else.

I'd ask Mr. Drusus to change my name here but I've been Megatron for about 11 or 12 of my 13 years of :ff: and I even have my own shaker :shakemegatron: so it's way too late for that now.

Mom finished her third round of chemo yesterday. She's feeling good and thanks to copious amounts of weed, she's keeping her appetite up and eating well.

She's gonna beat this motherfucker. Believe that. She's the toughest motherfucker I've ever known - she chews nails and spits fucking bullets. That bitch ain't gonna die from something stupid like this, 64 or not.

edit: Not yesterday. I've been working so much the days blend together. Two days ago. I've worked 34 hours in the last 3 days and honestly I spent the last hour of tonight's shift just dreaming of beer. I'm off till Monday morning now and I'm already half drunk. Thank Father Helel.

I didn't know that Livius transitioned to male. Then again, my participation on the forums has been intermittent of late, so I may have missed the transition.
