Eek. Sorry to hear that, Sock. I hope you appropriately punished the Roomba.

They have closed off the east wing at work for renovations, and while the ten people who worked in that wing have been moved elsewhere, it means the 14 or so of us in the west wing are down to surviving on TWO toilets instead of four.

This is what hell is like.

Check if your Roomba has a SkyNet chip in it.

It's clearly trying to kill you.

You may have to resort to other options.

Did I already mention that Google recently closed my fiber account erroneously, forcing me to 1) create a new google account, 2) resubscribe to google fiber, 3) reconfigure the wifi on over a dozen devices? :fuckgoogle:

Default Re: First World Problems

I don't like my Instant Pot.

My old presumably suboptimal multicooker started failing during important stuff, so I decided to "upgrade" to an Instant Pot. The two main things I use it for are rice and yogurt.

The IP is much much heavier than my old cooker, with a less secure lid when it's not in use, so I have to gently pick it up with both hands like it's a fucking baby instead of just grabbing it by one hand like I did with my old one. So now just making rice feels almost daunting. It's major overkill having to pull out that big heavy thing just for that.

But compared to YOGURT, that's nothing. With my old cooker, I'd put the milk in, turn it on, it would heat the milk up to kill stray bacteria, then cool it down to a temperature safe for the yogurt cultures, and when it had cooled completely, it would beep, I would add the cultures, and set the time, and it'd beep again when it was ready. With the Fucking Instant Pot, I put the milk in, it beeps when it's heated up, and then I have to REMOVE THE INNER POT to let it cool on the fucking counter, and I have to go back and check periodically with a thermometer to see when it's ready. There's barely an improvement over doing it manually. The only real automated part is the heating step, which was never that big a deal. It was the hovering over it while it cools that was the big pain in the ass, and now I have to do that again!

Also, you can't even do pressure canning in it. I thought it'd be nice to have around to can small batches of stuff, but NO NOT EVEN THAT. And I really can't see using the pressure cooking much, either. I like to tweak things as I go along and add different ingredients at different times rather than dumping everything in all at once.

In conclusion, I don't like my Instant Pot and think it is stupid.

(I have been too tired and poopy lately to post about anything but cooking.)

I never saw the name, 'instant pot' before, so I searched for it and see it's a combination electric pressure cooker and slow cooker.

I prefer my old, heat-on-the-gas-hob pressure cooker which I can carry to the sink and run cold water over to quickly remove heat and pressure.

But I do have a first world problem with my slow cooker. The plastic knob on the glass lid broke. Miraculously, I didn't drop the lid and break it, and I designed and 3D printed a replacement knob. It's working okay, but the PLA plastic it's printed from isn't rated for high temperature, so every time I lift the lid to stir the contents I'm worried that the new knob will pull off the screw thread that holds it.

Did you know that a shape of constant width does not fit inside a circle with a diameter equal to to that constant width?

I just wasted about 1.5 hours to learn this.

(Technically, the circle was slightly larger, but only by about 1 mm)

... Unless it is that circle.

Which by trivial application of handwavium is obviously the only possible case.

It's a Reuleaux triangle - this was the final result.

IMG_1255_sm.jpeg

The Reuleaux triangle is 30mm wide. I put a square hole 30mm across into a round base.

Did I post here about my Meissner Tetrahedron which is a sort-of 3D version of a Reuleaux triangle? I also designed and 3D-printed two other different solids of the same 'diameter' so I could do this.

I put the stl files on Thingiverse, if you want to print some.

Solids of constant width - YouTube

I "liked" them on Thingiverse so I can download them later. :)

I already have a model of the rotated Reuleaux triangle, but I haven't tried printing it with the new printer.

How did you print them? Supports? With rafts?

The Meissner one prints as two pieces with flat bases - no support needed - that you then glue together to get the finished tetrahedron. Super glue (cyano) works great.

The other two shapes I switched on support - I didn't try rafts. Mine came out with one face of the solid a bit rough after I'd scraped off the support material.

I really ought to cut those solids to print in two pieces like the Meissner one - I would do that if I ever print any more, but so far I've only printed the ones you see in the video.

The one I printed with my old 3D printer I also printed with supports, and I had the same annoyance - rough patches where the support and model met - truly a first world problem.

I was going to try a print, but had to spend the entire time re-tuning the 3D printer - something must have shifted, because everything was coming out shitty.

The Mor-man and I have a new abode, we moved 2 weeks ago.

He is complaining we have too much closet space and he liked it better when we were squished and he knew where things were.

The other stereotypical remedy is for the female partner to use up the vast majority of the closet space. Then the male partner doesn't face Mor-man's problem.
