Default Jesuits open new mission field

Jesuits say take word of God to Second Life [ Reuters ]

Quote:
ROME (Reuters) - Catholic missionaries have always trekked to dangerous parts of the Earth to spread the word of God -- now they are being encouraged to go into the virtual realm of Second Life to save virtual souls.

In an article in Rome-based Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica, academic Antonio Spadaro urged fellow Catholics not to be scared of entering the virtual world which may be fertile ground for new converts wishing to better themselves.

...
Emphasis added. Despite what the article says, it's real souls that they are after.

Can Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses be far behind?

Or Scientologists?

This is why every online game should be, by default, a free for all PvP game.

[Luvchrist]: "Excuse me, have you accepted Jes..."

Luvchrist takes 72 bazillion points of damage from your +20 Vorpal Pocket Knife of Pwnage

Luvchrist dies.

[Uthgar]: Werez ur mesiuh now, lawl!

It would be even better if the game had features that allowed you to call upon the power of pagan gods.

He says "Have you accepted Jesus?"

Your character prays to Thor and the Jesuit gets hit by lightning.

Next they'll be claiming that Second Life was somehow "created" instead of arising naturally through processes that can be understood by scientific enquiry.

Will we actually get to succeed in blowing up the Parliment buildings in Second Life?

No, they'll just say it was 'intelligently designed'. :yup:

I had a classmate that did geneology fieldwork with a pacifict Northwest tribe. The Jesuits had pretty well dominated the field where he worked, and one of the interesting features of his research protocols; he was fobidden to use Mormon software out of cncern over retroactive conversions.

This was back in the 90s - the battle for souls is ever-present, you know.
