I discovered this weekend that a mixture of powdered all-fabric, all-color bleach with plain water, applied to a soft cloth, will remove chocolate stains from a brand-new, custom-made couch slipcover without discoloring the fabric. It'll probably work on standard upholstery, too. My wife will now allow the Li'l Puppet to live to see age four.

While trying to find a way to clean silver, I came across this site. They suggest hydrogen peroxide for mold and they have solutions for carpet stains!

I'm all over the "Natural Insect Pest Control" page; we'll see if there's anything good there. Thanks, curses!

Approve Re: Cleaning Tips

Thanks again, liv, for the tip on using a :lemon: and baking soda to clean the garbage disposal. Tonight was :salad: night, and since I squeeze :lemon: onto my salad, I also make :salad: night "garbage disposal cleaning night" when I'm done cleaning up.

I just got done cleanning up and running the :lemon: and baking soda through the disposal. Not only is it August and no smell coming from the garbage disposal, but the whiff I take after it has ground up the :lemon: and baking soda is... :^^

That's great, Shell. I like the idea of combining disposal cleaning with salad night. I told wei yau to do it at least once every two weeks to prevent smells and he told me I was being obsessive! :hmph:

I totally agree about the yummeh scent. One thing that I was surprised to find when I started doing this is that I love the smell of fresh lemons while cleaning. Before then, I'd only ever smelled "lemony fresh" cleansers and I hate that stench. :yuck:

New tip: ancient rust/hardwater/general nastiness stains on porcelain will finally come up if you scrub the hell out of them with a pumice stone. I finally got my toilet back to like-new whiteness, which I'm sure it hasn't been in 3 decades.

The porcelain must be wet to ensure the pumice doesn't scratch the surface, but of course when you're cleaning the inside of a toilet that's not an issue.

Does it matter what kind of wet? :ffeek:

And carpets. And matresses. I sprinkle it on my matress between sheet changes and then vacuum it off. Not only does it freshen up the fabric, but it does a number on dust mites.

Hire someone to clean.....I would say have your kids help out, but I can't seem to get that to work in my household.

I'm moving over the next few days, so I'll be cleaning the old place from top to bottom. I'll report how the tricks in this thread work.

We have an enamel sink in the kitchen. There is a little brown stain on the enamel that has been here since we moved in. It isn't big, but its presence bothers me. I have tried the magic erasers, bleach, Comet, scrubbing, everything I can imagine. I'm afraid to scrub too much because it might damage the enamel. Any ideas?

Pumice stone. Just be sure the sink has water in it up past the stain or else the stone with scratch the enamel.

Will that work on enamel? Porcelain is tough stuff, enamel not so much. I is skeered of rusting the cast iron underneath. :afraid:
