I have a portal that is a blue guardian not that far from here, and I think the owner has onyx by now, but haven't been arsed to go take it down.
As for the 300 new uniques this month: not travelling anywhere in the next month and everywhere I am likely to go there will only be few portals I haven't already hacked. Must focus on getting JoeP to the goal. Of course, being where he is (that close to the map he posted), he could probably get there today.
I accidentally took out a guardian yesterday. Apparently it was at 291 days! The smurf was a bit annoyed but as it had served it's purpose he forgave me (i think). I wouldn't have taken it out, had I known, but seeing as it didn't cost him any badges I don't feel too bad.
I don't revenge smash guardians, I do tend to kill all blue, cause that's the game.
EXCEPT one guy (who even has a G+ labeled Guardain Killer [sic]" he's a total griefer. I just go out of my way to take all his portals all the time, always.

There is a setting somewhere in the Ingress app that lets you switch location smoothing on and off. I prefer off, but I think it's down to personal preference and how good the GPS receiver is in your phone.
There's also some setting for the compass mode - I think it's something to do with whether it defaults to north at the top or sensing the direction you're moving. I prefer the setting where the map doesn't turn around by itself and you just use your fingers on the screen to twist it around the way you want.

Yes, tap the compass. This seems to switch it between the direction you're facing (not moving), a fixed direction, and north-is-up. Any manual rotation will switch it to fixed direction mode.
My phones location settings allow for using GPS only, GPS and mobile networks or GPS, mobile networks and Wi-fi to locate you with, claimed, increased accuracy with more sources. I don't know how, or if, that interacts with the game but it may help in built up areas.
Despite it being a free game, and having so far managed to resist the urge to make in-game purchases, i have spent far more money playing Ingress, (mainly fuel, but also a few entrance fees), than on any other game in 30 odd years of gaming
Also, it occurs to me that, the company responsible for my increased spending, Niantic, benefit in no way whatsoever from it.
We spent all our monies on new phones, backup batteries, extra cables, unlimited data plans ... hahaha. Also 2 anomalies, one local and one with flights and hotels. Totally worth it.

They gather data that might help make their map data better (they can see what paths people take to travel between portals).
Also there are some sponsorship deals with SoftBank and MFG (of ultralink and capsule fame).
I think they also have a sponsorship deal with some chain of coffee shops or similar, where all the outlets have all been designated as Portals - so if you visit one of those coffee shops to hack its portal and buy a coffee then Niantic probably get a tiny cut of your money.
Hey you guys what is this thing about getting unique portals in September? I am so out of the loop, and I don't think there's shit I can do about it between now and Friday, but I heard something and I want to know what is up.
You get a medal if you hack 300 new unique portals in September (defined in UTC or something). I have 431, as measured by agent-stats.
There's another (or alternate) medal if you end up in the top 25% of new unique hacks ... currently that's sitting at 919 which could be a bit of a stretch.
eta: agent-stats is your friend here, if you saved stats close to the beginning of September. And not so much otherwise.
Hmmm maybe ten expeditions to new areas with 30+ portals could be possible I suppose...
Or one expedition to here?
Most of my new uniques were in
Jeebus, where the fuck is that?!
Basically I decided the best way to get would be to take a day off work and drive down to LA. There's literally no major city closer than that that I haven't already harvested.
I do have the option to go north and "grid out" San Francisco. There are plenty of non-uniques there for me, but there must also be uniques. Before today I hadn't checked in to agent stats since July 28, and my trip to Tahoe was in August so I have nooooo idea how many uniques I've gotten in September. I'm going to go ahead and assume zero to be safe
