Building managers and legislative staffers have sought to reassure some concerned Tennessee lawmakers that recent renovations at the state Capitol did not install special facilities for Muslims to wash their feet before praying.

“I confirmed with the facility administrator for the State Capitol Complex that the floor-level sink installed in the men’s restroom outside the House Chamber is for housekeeping use,” Legislative Administration Director Connie Ridley wrote in an email. “It is, in layman’s terms, a mop sink.”

The nearly $16 million renovation completed in December focused on upgrading electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems in the more than 150-year-old Capitol. Parts of the building also got new carpets, paint and security upgrades.

The lolbertarian Mercatus Center at George Mason University has once again again ranked the Several States according to freedom. Unsurprisingly, the leastest freest state is New York.1

The five mostest freest states in descending order are North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, New Hampshire and Oklahoma. Colorado is now only the nineteenth mostest freest state in the union, down twelve places since 2009.

As a Coloradan, my most cherished liberty is the freedom not to live in North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, New Hampshire or Oklahoma.

Surprisingly enough, most of the freedoms they care about are freedoms for corporations (ok, employers) and rich people and don't really benefit employees/poor people, at all.

Also most people think about their liberty to do things when they think of freedom, but apparently they mean "freedom to not pay any taxes ever" which is totally a different thing.

Pretty much the entire "fiscal freedom" section is irrelevant to me in a discussion of freedom.

In labor market freedom, I'm surprised they didn't include the 40-hour work week and child labor laws, given how concerned they are about employees.

I don't think there's much value to such rankings if you're not limiting yourself to very natural groups of issues (e.g. drug laws, or laws relating to the police, or gun laws, etc.) since the rankings are so strongly affected by the ideology. Even though I'm generally in favor of gun control, at least the gun control rankings would be sensible to me (it would just happen that the ones they consider the worst, I would probably like), although I'd want something finer tuned to assess which states' laws I agree with the most.

I think my favorites are freedom from tort abuse, and the apparent lack of any measure for reproductive freedoms. Unless I'm somehow missing it among the thousands of discrete "freedoms" they did count.

I'll bet they just forgot. Someone should go tell them.

ETA: Hey, I cannot believe I forgot this one, because I am reading an article about it right now, but what about the freedom to own large exotic animals, or the freedom to walk around without your neighbors' large exotic animals all up on your dick all the time? Depending on which freedom is more important. I don't know because I am not a professional freedom counter.

That one's my personal favorite. After all, nothing says freedom like the right to fuck someone up and not pay for it. I suppose some people might consider welfare for the insurance industry something other than freedom, but those people are stupid.
