Re: Republicans suck
So, I got a telephone poll today. The way that it worked was that they would ask you a question, and then you'd hit a number to indicate your response.
Question #5 was: "Will you (1) definitely vote for Mitch McConnell, (2) probably vote for Mitch McConnell, (3) probably vote for someone else, or (4) definitely vote for someone else"?
I hit the "4" button.
The response was: "You have entered an invalid number; please try again."
So I hit the "4" button again.
The response was: "You have entered an invalid number; please try again."
I hung up.
So, how much do you want to bet that McConnell's people will put out a press release soon, claiming that telephone polling shows overwhelming support for McConnell?

Like Dr Lee said at the time when Broun called evolution lies from the pits of hell, at least the quotes show that he did hear about evolution at UGA.
It is with deep shame that I acknowledge that such a fucktard also attended our alma mater.

Re: Republicans suck
I think what’s surprising to me isn’t so much their willingness to throw people to the lions for a cup of coffee, but their willingness to eat their own base. Old people are notorious in mass conservative voters, do they think they just won’t need them anymore, or do they not realize who they are feeding to the lions.
Like Alex Jones claiming he will eat his neighbors is funny but there’s no way in hell his neighbors aren’t anything but affluent and white. Which turns it into a more sinister, ‘I’ll turn on you all at the blink of an eye’ statement.

Re: Republicans suck
Fantastic piece. I’ve been trying to get the term “vice-signalling” to catch on for quite some time, as it’s a perfect descriptor of what the GOP has been doing. I’ve also been saying for a long time that their accusations of the left “virtue-signalling” is yet another case of projection, since they’re doing it all the time (with the caveat that their “virtues” aren’t). But the COVID-19 crisis is certainly proving that, in many cases, they are more attached to their ideology of hatred than they are to their own lives; or perhaps they are so impervious to reality that they do not even understand that their own lives are at stake. As the famous, prophetic tweet puts it:
That said, I feel as though a couple of other quotes from two historical figures who are fairly problematic overall also belong in this thread. The first is Lyndon Baines Johnson:
Quote:
If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.
|
And the second is Howard Phillips Lovecraft. I posted this quote already in the Random Cthulhus thrad, but it’s so good that it belongs here as well:
Quote:
As for the Republicans—how can one regard seriously a frightened, greedy, nostalgic huddle of tradesmen and lucky idlers who shut their eyes to history and science, steel their emotions against decent human sympathy, cling to sordid and provincial ideals exalting sheer acquisitiveness and condoning artificial hardship for the non-materially-shrewd, dwell smugly and sentimentally in a distorted dream-cosmos of outmoded phrases and principles and attitudes based on the bygone agricultural-handicraft world, and revel in (consciously or unconsciously) mendacious assumptions (such as the notion that real liberty is synonymous with the single detail of unrestricted economic license or that a rational planning of resource-distribution would contravene some vague and mystical ‘American heritage’…) utterly contrary to fact and without the slightest foundation in human experience? Intellectually, the Republican idea deserves the tolerance and respect one gives to the dead.
|
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
That said, I think there may be more than racism (a vice of which Lovecraft himself was in fact quite guilty) going on here. One of the members of my Discord posted the following tweet thrad which also provides some food for thought, based on the idea that the ideology of the modern Republican Party is rooted in the idea of “nostalgia for an age that never existed”, in Jello Biafra’s phrase:
Which, of course, makes them reactionaries. I don’t know that I agree with everything the author states, but he raises many interesting points.

Re: Republicans suck
Im hesitant to ever chalk anything that reeks of racism as something other than because in my experience people are all too charitable in that regard. I mean things aren't monolithic, reactionaries can be racist and suggesting that they shouldn't be referred to as racist seems like nonsense to me.
I mean the argument that they are reactionary is not nonsense, but I don't care if their racism stems from wanting to go back to some halcyon days of yore where the field hands looked how they think they ought to look and were happy in the fields.
Fuck, now that I think about it, almost all the fuckshit racists I have known dream of a mythological america that never was, but the Klan is still racist.
Also, this tweet by him just shows profound ignorance of how white nationalism and racism works.
Quote:
What people read as racism is nostalgia for the prosperity that slavery brought the South.
How do we know? A black person carrying a rifle and wearing a MAGA hat will experience little to no racism other than occasional careless ignorance. They certainly won't see racial hatred.
|
The fact that there are black maga people who are provisionally accepted in some maga circles doesn't preclude people liking the Confederacy because of the racism. Ive known many, many racists that carve out "one of the good ones" exceptions.
Also these are my thoughts, and I don't mean to be aggro in the discussion, and I know that I didn't address the idea that maga is reactionary. I am not saying that he is wrong about that.

Re: Republicans suck
Yeah, that’s the part where I’m not sure I agree with him. I think this is, as usual these days, a case of both-and. MAGA is both racist and reactionary – but then, reactionary politics usually are racist by definition, since the past (imagined or otherwise) was quite racist!
So I think by saying “MAGA is not about white supremacy”, the author misses the mark a bit. I mean, MAGA is ‘about’ a lot of things. Reactionary politics certainly encompass a lot of them, but the thing is that the various -isms and -phobias are encompassed within reactionary politics, so by saying “MAGA is not about” those things, you are taking a narrower view than is merited here.
So in a way, it’s the same mistake the class-not-race people make. It’s both class and race (and gender, and sexual orientation, and various markers within the category of mental health, and so on).
But I think he has a fair point that overall, reactionary politics are a large part of what MAGA is about (insofar as MAGA can be said to be about anything – like many populist-authoritarian movements, it is not particularly coherent in its ideology, if it can even be said to possess one). And I don’t think you can really understand MAGA without understanding reactionary politics. I think this summation by cleek summarises it to some extent:
Quote:
Today’s conservatism is the opposite of what liberals want today, updated daily.
|
But all that said, MAGA is definitely racist, and sexist, and classist, and ableist, and homophobic/transphobic, and many other -isms, in addition to being reactionary.
The other summation I keep coming back to is this formation by Frank Wilhoit:
Quote:
Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:
There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
[…]
The core proposition of anti-conservatism requires no supplementation and no exegesis. It is as sufficient as it is necessary. What you see is what you get:
The law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone; and it cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone.
|
I keep quoting this because if I were reorganising society from the ground up, his final sentence would be the one principle I would use above all others to guide every decision I made.

Quoting this for quotability.
And perhaps "attached to their ideology of hatred" is a way of looking at the racism vs nostalgia and in-group vs out-group discussion in the past couple of posts. They all work together in the minds of the right: desire for an imagined perfect situation where we've got ours and other are deprived, which may or may not be an imagined past; other races are the preferred but not the only target for out-grouping.
Racism is absolutely central to the majority, but you by definition can't have racism without out-grouping, and racism without hatred is a fiction (of the "I'm not racist, but" kind).
