I'm bumping this old thread because I'm about to start on a similar project. Although I do have many hundreds of prints and negatives to scan as well, the most urgent project is a whole lot of slides. Like at least hundreds, maybe thousands. The method I have chosen to go with for the slides is a DSLR camera with macro lens and slide mount attachment. I'll only be able to do one slide at a time but that should still go a lot faster than any available scanner I could find. I went with the Nikon D610 DSLR, AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens, and ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter. I'm hoping I can digitize most or all of the slides in time to give copies to the photographer, and he is currently 95 yrs. old.
This article convinced me to go this route.
