Both Nancy Reagan and Ayn Rand died on this date. 2016 and 1982 respectively.

RIP Hal Blaine

This guy falls not so much under the heading "was famous" as under the heading "would have been famous in a just universe."

When Brian Wilson's mental illness progressed to the point where he could no longer tour, he'd stay home while the rest of the Beach Boys toured, write the songs for the band's next album, and record the instrumental tracks using studio musicians. He'd bring in the rest of the Beach Boys to lay down the vocal tracks when their tour was over.

Wilson regularly used a group of studio musicians collectively known as the Wrecking Crew, which included drummer Hal Blaine. He played on Good Vibrations and the classic album Pet Sounds.

But the Beach Boys stuff was just the beginning. Check out the linked article for some of the other legendarily famous music he worked on. There's pretty much no one who hasn't heard Blaine's drumming.

R.I.P. to Hal Blaine. :(

Also, I only just today discovered that Mark Hollis, lead singer/songwriter of Talk Talk, passed away last month at the age of 64. In case you haven't heard them, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock kickstarted the genre of post-rock (alongside Slint's Spiderland) and remain two of the genre's defining masterpieces decades on. The Colour of Spring, the band's third album, is also great (though not really post-rock). Day ruined now. :sadcheer:

Dick Dale.

He's been sick a while, but he kept touring at least in part to cover his medical bills.

Further evidence of the barbarity of our healthcare system. :blank:

Everyone knows Dale from Pulp Fiction for “Misirlou” and many people know him as one of the pioneers of surf rock, but while I could tell he was obviously a great guitarist, I didn’t fully understand how influential he was until the news of his passing broke. He was one of if not the first people to introduce Middle Eastern scales into popular music, and he was so instrumental in Leo Fender’s design of his guitars that some commentators have referred to him as the Father of Heavy Metal. I can kind of hear that now; in addition to his connection to the development of electric guitars and amplifiers, he also popularised tremolo picking as an electric guitar technique, which is of course ubiquitous in metal music. And his music was shockingly loud for the early ’60s as well. (Some of this is explained in the article Mr Pea linked, but I don’t always read those that closely.)

A few other things I didn’t know: He was of Lebanese, Polish, and Belarusian descent, and he became an environmental activist after pollution worsened an injury he suffered and almost caused him to lose a leg. Also, the line “you’ll never hear surf music again” in Hendrix’ song “Third Stone from the Sun” was Hendrix’ reaction to hearing that Dale had cancer and a sly way of encouraging Dale to recover. In gratitude, Dale later covered “Third Stone”.

I’m going to have to check out a lot more of his work. I’m sure I’ve heard several of his other songs, but since they’re mostly instrumentals, I probably don’t know any except “Misirlou” by name.

…Also, from the sidebar I see that actor Richard Erdman has also died at age 93. :sadcheer: I knew him best for his role as perpetual student Leonard from Community, but he also had major roles in The Twilight Zone and numerous other works.

R.I.P. to both. :(

Not the scumbag ex-Wisconsin governor, unfortunately:

Scott Walker, experimental pop hero, dies aged 76 | Music | The Guardian

Scott Walker, Experimental Singer-Songwriter, Dies at 76 – Rolling Stone

Scott Walker Dead at 76 - Pitchfork

What a voice. He wasn't quite a household name in the U.S. (I think his solo output, especially after his first couple of albums, was probably just too weird for that level of fame), but he was an enormous, acknowledged influence on many acts who were, including Radiohead and David Bowie. There was no one else quite like him.

Rachel Held Evans, the hugely popular evangelical writer, is dead at 37.

Horrible news. I don't think I'd read any of her books, but I must've read several interviews with her or essays she wrote over the years, and she was a completely unique writer with a sound ethical perspective, a vanishingly rare thing within evangelicalism. And 37 is just way too fucking young. She had two kids, ages three and one, which just makes it worse. This news underscores the fragility of human life, I guess. R.I.P.

Jim Fowler, who hosted 'Wild Kingdom' series, is dead at 89 - CNN

My dad had a super-firm rule when we were kids that we were not allowed to ask for anything we saw in a commercial, and if anyone mentioned a commercial or sang a jingle, that product was instabanned from our house. Thing is, we also weren't allowed to watch much TV. I think we each got an hour or something per week of cartoons or something, and an ahead of its time zero rating system for nature documentaries, mostly "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom."

So one day, I was straight up livid with my dad. Enraged over some injustice that my memory has repressed, probably due to how traumatic. So I went with the nuclear option. I ran upstairs, leaned over the railing, and sang at the top of my lungs, "MUTUAL OF OMAHA IS PEOPLE YOU CAN COUNT ON WHEN THE GOING'S TOUGH!" because it was the only commercial jingle I could think of.

Sorry, that was the only story I have even remotely about Jim Fowler.

Oh man, Jim Fowler was awesome. Marlin Perkins narrated the out-in-the-wild footage for Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, and I used to get a huge kick out of it when the narration went along the lines of, "I'll stay here with the Land Rover while Jim wrestles that 30-foot anaconda sunning itself on the shore and tries not to get dragged into the water and drowned."

I spent a lot of time at my grandparents' place, where they had all of 4 channels. Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, Hee Haw, and the goddamned 6 O'Clock News were all I ever saw there for awhile.

I think I recall (for whatever nothing that's worth) that Marlin often wasn't even on the trips, and just narrated from an even safer distance (the studio). "Now Jim attempts to remove the injured baby from the badger's nest. Cute little fella. Our faithful crew will be sure to give him prompt attention before he suffers permanent disfigurement."

"The mother badger uses her sharp claws to defend her babies at all cost. You too need protection. Mutual of Omaha can provide you with ..."

In fairness, Marlin Perkins was quite the dynamic individual in his day, too. Of course, he was well past his prime by the time he started hosting Wild Kingdom.

As will probably surprise no one, I absolutely loved Wild Kingdom as a kid. Marlin was nice enough, but Jim Fowler and (to a much lesser extent) Stan Brock were my personal heroes. I even cited Fowler as one of my personal influences during my Master's defense.
