LOL young people don't even know the best DC comic villain, Egghead, played here by Vincent Price, the handsomest man who ever lived.

Do you even anything? Anything at all?

So the local grocery here is now being run by Jackie, a chinese immigrant. He cooks as a hobby and has been learning to cook 'canadian food', which so far has meant mostly pizzas. Today was ham and STRAWBERRY. ...It was surprisingly good! Like ham & pineapple without the 'oh god its pineapple' aura pineapple infuses into everything it touches.

And I mean srsly good. I scarfed a good two-thirds of a huge piece before I thought to wonder what it was.

I probably shouldn't admit this publicly, but I bought some frozen pot pies, and they say on the box, "Flaky crust MADE FROM SCRATCH."

These are mass produced frozen pot pies. Of fucking course they make the crusts from scratch. Why are they pointing that out like it's a thing that anyone might have doubted?

You know why.

Because most frozen pies are (probably™) made with sub-contracted bought-in modern-supply-chain just-in-time SuperCateringPastryProduct®.

Ultimately, though, everything is made from scratch, and it didn't even specify whether it was at their own food product factory or some other one.

There is a number on the box that you can call with questions or concerns, so I would like someone to do that, please.

Default Re: Miscellany

So, you remember Professor Slacker, who doesn't even pretend that he cares about the students, or that he enjoys teaching? And who, whenever a student dares to ask a question, belittles the student and refuses to answer the question?

So, he gave a test on Monday. Some of the students came to me beforehand, so that I could teach them the stuff that Professor Slacker was supposed to have taught them.

Some of them showed me the Powerpoints he'd given them. Professor Slacker's "teaching" style is to show the students Powerpoint slides, read verbatim from the slides, explain nothing, and refuse to answer questions. Students have told me that he'll routinely go through 100+ slides in less than 15 minutes, then walk out of the room, having explained nothing and having refused to take questions.

Anyway, I took a look at those Powerpoint slides. Most of them are simple bullet points, providing little or no context and no explanation whatsoever. In fact, I'm pretty sure I know where he got them: nowadays, when you adopt a textbook, the publisher will usually send you a pre-made Powerpoint presentation to go along with it. I never use these, because I prefer to make up my own lectures, thankyouverymuch. Most of the slides that Professor Slacker used in his presentation look exactly like those that come with a textbook, and I'm pretty sure that's exactly where he got them. But a few do look different. One of the students, Jennifer, had a hunch and checked Wikipedia. It turns out that those slides were copied, word-for-word, from Wikipedia.

Okay.

Anyway, Jennifer had a question about something she thought he might ask on the test. So I explained it to her. Well, they got back their tests today, and, as it happens, that very question had been on the exam. And Jennifer gave the correct answer. And Professor Slacker counted it as "wrong." I was so upset that I might have given Jennifer an incorrect answer that I went back and researched it myself, to make sure I hadn't given her an incorrect explanation. I hadn't. The answer she had given was correct.

This got me thinking. Professor Slacker's "teaching" style is to simply show the students slides that look like they were taken straight from the textbook publisher (except for a few that were copied straight from Wikipedia); to read the slides verbatim, without providing context, explanations, or examples; and to refuse to answer questions -- while belittling anyone who dares to ask a question.

Does he actually understand the material he's supposedly teaching? Maybe he doesn't. It seems to me entirely likely that he's just bluffing his way through, and that he doesn't actually understand the material he's supposed to be teaching. It would certainly explain an awful lot.

So, Jennifer and Katie told me about their experience in the Science Department. One of the Chemistry professors is a decent guy, but can't teach. One of them is Professor Groper, who would rather ogle young women and make sexist/sexual jokes than teach. The Physics professor is both unapproachable and a terrible teacher. And then we have the Biologists: one knows her stuff but openly bullies and belittles students -- and even brags about doing so, and one doesn't even pretend that he respects/likes the students or has any interest in teaching them (and I'm beginning to suspect that he's not just unwilling to teach them, he's unable to teach the material).

They told me, "You're the only person in the Department who's both a competent teacher and who cares about us."

You know, I'm beginning to think that this place could use a good purge ...

Haha omg! A few Highlights,
•I’m not sexist, see I believe women should be in any simple vocation that lends itself to being compatible with motherhood.

•I don’t think gay men should be banned from *all* academia because they are predators, but that older students are better at defending themselves, so I’m fine with those predators in university.

•Race is a zero sum game, you’re hurting white people by helping black ones. By seeing race, aren’t you really the racist here, hmmm.
