Johnson accused of misunderstanding own Brexit deal after NI remarks | Politics | The Guardian

The word "accused of" in the title are just the equivalent of "allegedly" ... there's no actual doubt about it.

Bozo doesn't understand "his" deal, makes bold claims based on what people want to hear (with no concern for what other people want to hear), and doesn't care about the consequences.

And will still probably win the election.

Quote:
The Brexit secretary, Stephen Barclay, told the House of Lords last month that businesses would need to complete “exit summary declarations” when sending shipments from Northern Ireland to the rest of the UK.

Asked whether he was saying the government would not enforce such declarations, Johnson said: “That’s right – we’re one UK territory, we need to get this deal done, get it over the line and take the country forward.”

The shadow Brexit secretary, Keir Starmer, said Johnson “either doesn’t understand the deal he negotiated, or isn’t telling the truth. Probably both”.

Famed anarchist graphic novelist Alan Moore announces – via social media, no less – that he is voting for Labour, and encourages anyone who has ever enjoyed one of his works to do likewise:

These are strange times we live in.

Well, fuck. I kind of expected these results to be bad, but not really this bad. Can’t say I have much insightful to say, though.

Default Re: Brexit EU referendum polling stations.

It looks like Corbyn is going down in flames.

A few things I'd note about this... with a view to some responses in the US.

1. People who feted Corbyn's 2017 as a historic victory were cherry-picking to find certain measures that made him look unusually successful instead of looking at the most obvious measures - the number of seats gained, the total number of seats (a minority) and the Labour-Tory margin (the Tories won the popular vote). A loss is a loss.

Tony Blair won a majority, flipped 145 seats and won the popular vote by a large margin. Yet they deluded themselves into thinking Corbyn's minority, 30 seats flipped and popular vote loss was more impressive.

2. Even if you thought Corbyn's 2017 performance was encouraging, even if not a historic victory, which was perfectly fair, his personal approval rating was decent, even positive, in the aftermath. It's been below -20 for almost two years, and averaging like -40 the past year. It was delusion to think that the polls would inevitably surge and Labour should've dropped him once it was clear that he was an abysmal albatross around their necks.

3. Bernie Sanders is not Corbyn. He polls far, far better than Corbyn. Miles better! American leftists defending Corbyn as an implicit defense of Sanders were just tying Bernie to someone who is far worse at politics than him!

4. Arguments that somehow Corbyn's 2017 performance was an argument for nominating Bernie look deeply, deeply stupid at this point. But like I said, Bernie is not Corbyn, so the good news for Bernie folks is that saying Corbyn's loss inevitably means that Bernie will lose is also a stupid argument.

You'll just have to argue for Bernie on the basis of something else. But maybe learn something from bad assumptions you made about Corbyn.

5. It might not be the UK for much longer. Scotland leaving looks likely, and maybe even Northern Ireland leaving...

6. If you wanna get some Hillary hate in, you might connect persisting with an unpopular candidate to picking Clinton in 2016. But Clinton's numbers were a lot better than Corbyn's. And Sanders's 2016 polls do seem to have been inflated. His favorability and head-to-heads against Trump are fine compared to other Democrats - a little worse than Biden, a little better than Warren and others (although his name recognition is significantly higher). That's fine. But people were arguing he would win in a landslide and outperform any Democrat by miles. It's fine to say he's just as electable. But it's not fine to act like he's by far the most popular politician in America, or even the most popular at all. He isn't.

7. To the extent you wanna blame Corbyn's loss on the media, ummm... you better not be one of the people who claims the media did nothing wrong in 2016.

8. Economic populism doesn't automatically break through xenophobia and racism.

9. Picking a leader with a group of followers who hate the party he's leading might not be the best recipe for the party unity necessary to win elections. This one is directed somewhat at Bernie.

But the Democratic primary system is not as easy to game as the stupid system that Labour implemented that chose Corbyn (the Labour system is more similar to a caucus than a primary). As such, Bernie probably can't win the nomination without being better at assembling a coalition than Corbyn is. But this is something that makes me doubt his nomination chances - he can hope to ride a dedicated faction while the rest of the Democrats fight amongst themselves, the way Trump rode to victory in 2016. But the problem is that the Democratic primary awards delegates proportionately - if nobody wins a majority, you'll need to wheel and deal with the delegates, who as more committed Democrats for the most part, will be disinclined to support him. A compromise candidate, he ain't. The other problem is that if it gets down to two candidates, I'm skeptical that he can win 1-on-1 against Biden, Warren or even Buttigieg. And the lefties who think you should be saying "fuck you" to most of the established politicians in your party instead of trying to win them over... like who is the successful left-wing politician almost anywhere who took that approach and had big achievements?

10. Some of these arguments are more about the validity of other arguments, rather than saying you need to nominate or not nominate any particular person! Except Corbyn. You should not nominate him.
