Stalin Was a Babe
In his mid twenties he looked like Christian Slater with bigger eyes and better hair. When I first came across this pic in his Wikipedia entry, I couldn't even believe it was him.

That photo was part of this series on Cracked which was posted a few days ago. The picture of Stalin was definitely one of the most surprising, but several of the others are pretty surprising as well.

Man, they got Kurt all wrong. One - he was a grungy loser and he knew it, he'd eat a whole damn pizza like any normal grungy loser would. Not surprised. I don't think he played up to a tortured artist image, either. Channeling negative feelings into art doesn't necessarily mean you want to be seen as "The Depressed Guy", it's more like wanting to be seen as an artist or a musician or whatever, who happens to write/capture some depressing stuff. Lots of their riffs and lyrics were fun and playful. I guess he means it would shatter his pop culture image (?), but I've read his journals and books about him, so I guess it's not supposed to be a surprise to me.
It would suck to never have fun, ever. Then he wouldn't've even made it to 27.

Looking at the before and after in the Cracked article, I don't see the resemblance in Stalin. I'm not doubting it's him. I just don't see how he got from the first picture to the second. Aging badly is an understatement.

Looking at the lips and the jawline of the teenager and the photo in the OP, they don't match. The lips in the teenager are pouty and small, but the lips on the OP photo are even. The jawline on the teenager is angular while the jawline in the OP is more square. The teenager photo is missing the chin dimple that's so prominent in the other two photos.

The teenager pic doesn't look like a photograph.
Then there's this pic of him from when he was 33:
I see some similarity to the teenage picture, but he looks pretty different from both of the previous pics. So weird.

I'd bet that the teen picture was retouched. I was fairly common for portrait photos of the time. But, of course, that production was not from his teen years, as it is entitled with his later, self-adopted, name, Stalin. It's possible that the official Stalin power machine was responsible for the 'touch-ups', given that they were quite adept at it....there may have even been masses of others in the picture who were excised, a specialty of the Stalin photo-masters.

This is the death mask of Lorenzo de' Medici, aka Lorenzo the Magnificent. He was painted a lot in life but of course portraits you're paying someone to paint tend towards the flattering. In this case, though, I think they sold him short.
He was 43 when he died and clearly still in his prime. Look at those cheekbones and sweet Jesu look at that nose.
