Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
We just did ALL of our Christmas shopping plus went to the post office to send some totally non-holiday related mail, and we did it in about an hour and a half, maybe. HA HA HA! HA HA! HA!
My trick is that I did a reverse psychology prayer where I asked Jehovah for there to be a bunch of really long lines so it would take a super-long time.

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
This is my pettiest accomplishment ever because I literally did nothing to accomplish it. Nothing direct, at any rate. I've mentioned historian Tony Perrottet here before as someone whose writings, in both book and article form, I follow. He has a new book out now and is doing the standard book tour stuff which I've been reading (hence the YouTube about Edward VII's sex chair).
Since I am cheap and have become accustomed to publishers giving me history books for free, I wondered if I could actually initiate contact with a publisher myself to get a book I'm interested in, rather than just take whatever books they send out. Since I am also lazy, I didn't pursue the matter and proceeded instead to pick my nose and scratch my ass according to schedule.
Yesterday, entirely out of the blue, I got an email from my blog's contact form from a marketing guy at Random House asking me if I would be interested in reviewing Tony Perrottet's The Sinner's Grand Tour: A Journey Through the Historical Underbelly of Europe. I replied that yes, yes I would.

Surely that can all be explained by some Secret-type law of attraction, right? You willed it so it happened, with the POWER OF YOUR MENTAL MIND.

i had to, out of logistical necessity,
step down from the board of our
local PFLAG chapter, mainly because
nearly all of their activity occurs in
the evening hours and i am about to
have 2 semesters of night courses...
BUT i have become a volunteer at our
local cultural center/museum (tiny town)
and now have a KEY to the sandstone castle!
i get to do my first "open" tomorrow morning!

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
I'm not sure if this is petty enough, but here it is.
For the last 5 1/2 years I have been taking care of my grandson and step-grandson (picking him up from school and helping with homework) so my daughter and son-in-law can have full time jobs without needing to pay for a babysitter. About 20 months ago we added a grandaughter. 2 yrs and 9 mo. ago our house burned and I was overseeing the re-construction along with the grandchildren for just over a year. 2 years and 7 mo. ago my son-in-law lost his drivers license, so I was taxi service whan the daughter was working, including 30 days of work release when she couldn't help. I'm not sure how much of an accomplishment it is, it just seemed like what I needed to do. At 3 1/2 years I was the main force in potty training the grandson. I need to go now the grandaughter wants to help type.

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
You know, that's pretty messed up. Here you are, helping your own family out and you think that's petty.
I don't understand that at all, here it is the Friday before Father's Day and you're posting about how helping out your family in need is petty and hardly worth mentioning.
What's gonna be next?
"Oh I fucked cured cancer, but who the hell cares"
or
"I have brought about world peace, big fucking deal"
That's fucked up right there, man. Fucked. Up.

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
I made a menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the beginning of the week, limited my grocery shopping to items on said menu, and stuck to the menu all week*; not eating out once.
*I did give in and have some ice cream in between meals a couple times, but my primary goal was not eating out for meals so I still call it a win.

What! Isn't that enough to qualify, how about in Jan '08 I had pneumonia that showed up congestive heart failure, so I couldn't watch the kids for a few weeks, I could barely get down and back up the steps to tend the wood fire. In Dec. '08 I bought a car that needed a front end, and replaced that in my son's driveway, I was driving the car by the end of Dec. Last summer I built a stone retaining wall to hold back a dirt bank from eroding about 30' by 8' high. Add in a trip to the hospital in Feb '10 and getting a defibrillator for my trouble. Lets see keeping several cars going, and now we are partitioning some rooms for my daughter who moved back in with her 2 children, and I'm still taxi service. Is that enough petty stuff to brag about for you?
The best part was the fall, in the rental house while our new house was being built. I would rake leaves into a big pile and my grandson would dive into it, he would actually disapear and pop back up. I really enjoyed that so I shouldn't be so selfish and brag about it.

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
You disgust me.
All those great things and you see them as petty. What else is so great in your life that these things seem so small by comparison?
Why not just enjoy those things, then, you bitter, angry, little man.
Wasn't it Henry who once said....

I once posted here that I took in my sister, since she had reached bottom and was floundering badly, and my only recourse of help was to have her live with me. Apparently people think this is a big deal. But the real thing is, if you love someone, you just adjust your life to deal with what's necessary, without a lot of thought as to how much of an accomplishment this is to the outside world. So using my experience, I find that your accomplishment has the same sort of "flavor" that my accomplishment has, and I understand why it's not such a very big deal in your head. But when you put it in a larger context than just "support the ones you love or feel responsible for" it is something of a big deal.

Yes and I do all that so that I can do what I think is really important,
'When I'm holding my grandaughter and rocking her to sleep.'
There is almost nothing else I do that can compair to that.

My daughter notsosure made the Dean's Honor Roll at community college for her grades in the previous quarter. She's currently taking only one class, her second in Japanese.
