Re: Codenames
It actually seems like there is not point in taking a guess. Since there are two words left, we can only get one. It is risk with no real pay off since they can still get two and win. We just have to hope that they don't get both.

Japanese for father it seems.
If the clue was just father I would be looking at: Mom, Aunt, Niece.
That it is Japanese, I would think Sushi and Mom are the answers.
Any help double checking I have the translation correct would be welcome.

Re: Codenames
I never saw or heard the word before, but after searching around the web I agree with your translation and your analysis.
If the words are Mom and Sushi, I suppose E.S. wouldn't have given us the clue 'Okaasan' (mother) as someone's mother is also likely to be an aunt, niece, and/or babysitter? The Japanese for 'father' is a better clue to lead us to Sushi and Mom.
I think we should definitely follow the Japanese connection first so I'll do that now. Assuming we're right then we could wait and see what Kael thinks before we make our final guess.
Guess: Sushi

Re: Codenames
You know what, sorry Kael but let's get this over. The only other words that might fit 'father' are Aristocrat and Babysitter, but if E.S. had wanted us to guess Aristocrat or Babysitter with Sushi then she could just have posted the Japanese word for Aristocrat or Babysitter.
By the way, Crumb, I suppose there's no rule against posting the word itself as the best possible clue for a single word? I suppose you could have done that in the previous game when your team only had one word left?
Anyway, here goes...
Guess: Mom

Sorry if that wasn't clear form my rules. You can't use any of the unguessed words on the board as clues.

So what about the foreign version of a word? Of course, E.S. didn't do that this time as she posted the Japanese version of 'Father', and 'Father' isn't in the grid. But if she'd posted the Japanese word for 'Mom' that would be against the rules?
I suppose it's not feasible to just ban the use of foreign words outright, as for many words it's arguable whether or not they have become adopted into English. You could only really do it by having an agreed dictionary like they do in Scrabble competitions - but that would then rule out the use of those multi-word sequences for clues that you said, in some circumstances, can be legal.
Edit to add: I suppose you could have an agreed dictionary that would then rule out most foreign words, but still allow proper nouns, people's names (however foreign), and allow proper nouns, like 'Denver' to be embedded in phrases like, "Things to do in Denver When You're Dead". That's probably all a bit over-the-top for a simple friendly forum game.

Re: Codenames
I think that's the round so I'm gonna un-
I asked Lemoncello privately if non-English words were allowed. I got the go-ahead and I had intended to use the Japanese word for mother. But then I thought that's just straight-up cheating, or abusing the allowance anyway. So I opted for father and you guys figured it out. Yay!

Re: Codenames
So, wanted to explain that last round: when I did Black & White I was going for the proper noun rule, there's tons of specific things with that name or a close variant, but I was banking on you guessing based off the words alone because of the ambiguity of just what I could be referencing. Definitely against the spirit of the rule, and I should have run it by lemoncello first, so I was okay with her calling a penalty. I never even realized it might lead toward Monitor, so that was just me

Re: Codenames
Congratulations Blue Team Ensign Steve was pretty creative with clues - and I didn't have a problem with another language.
Round 3 will start tonight - I have to put the grid together. This will be the tie breaker - great job both teams.
erimir & ceptimus will be our clue givers.
Here is the solution to Round 2

Swamp | Recycle | Flotsom | Blacksmith | Babysitter | Outside | Mom | Aligator | Blimp | Sushi | Atlantis | Psychologist | Oil | Stairs | Tractor | Avocado | Mud | Niece | Rainwater | Tornado | Aristocrat | Aunt | Listen | Cartography | Archaeologist |

ES did damn good and your guess really put you in a position to win. It was a good round. If it wasn't for my botch, Red team would have been in a better position, but still I don't know if we'd have overcome that.

I think Hill might actually be wrong though, since he gave us TWO guesses with an olympic class -SKI-JUMPER-
