According to the French gov't even the strongest buildings have been damaged, which probably means the rest of them are gone...

And because i know how much everyone loves a Reddit thread, here's the live thread for the hurricane. It's slow now but as it gets closer to florida the posts will pile in. Lots of up to date forecast models and the like being posted.

Prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda says Barbuda is now 'barely habitable'. Dutch authorities are still trying to assess damage on Sint Maarten as main communications tower came down. Navy ships have been sent.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
Eight people died on the French Antilles, some of them on St Martin. The situation on the Dutch half is still unclear as the harbour and airport were destroyed as well. Nobody died on the other (tiny) Dutch islands of Saba and St Eustatius.
Meanwhile another storm, Jose, is expected soon, but not as severe.

Six. Three of them (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, aka the Leeward Islands) are off the coast of Venezuela. The other 3 (Saba, St Eustatius and St Maarten) are part of the Windward Islands and those were all hit.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
So looks like Miami is gonna get the brunt of this storm, with a second landfall near Savannah, which it will then track northwest and come close to Atlanta because fuck you. Ugh.

In English, the ABC islands are part of the Leeward Antilles and Saint Martin is part of the Leeward Islands and both can be considered part of the Lesser Antilles. Not confusing at all!
The Windward Islands are the section of the Lesser Antilles that is oriented mostly north-south, from Dominica to Grenada.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
Yeah, it's a bit confusing in English. It's called Bovenwindse eilanden (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao), which means Above/Upper wind islands and Benedenwindse eilanden Down/Lower wind in Dutch. But apparently they do call it the Windward Islands in the local English to add to the confusion.

They say one death on Sint Maarten so far. But it's still pretty chaotic.

Good news is forest fires extremely unlikely.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
Pretty much everything’s closed here now in anticipation of the hurricane. It’s expected to pass by us tomorrow night or early Sunday morning. If current projections hold, it looks like it’ll hit the actual continent at an unpopulated part of Monroe County (the Keys have already been evacuated, and the mainland part of Monroe County has about 60 people living in it, because it’s mostly the Everglades) or one of the less populated parts of Collier County, and it’ll probably be a Category 2 or Category 3 by the time it passes by Sarasota.
We’re probably in a fairly good position for Florida, all things told. We’re several miles back from the coastline, and at least twenty feet above sea level – possibly closer to twenty-five. We also have most of our valuables on the second floor of our house. We’ve also got hurricane shutters up. Building codes these days are pretty good, though if the storm still had 185 mph winds when it hit here, just about everyone here would be fucked.
Hopefully, things won’t be as disastrous here as they were in Houston. I largely agree with what Erik Loomis writes at LGM about urban planning contributing to issues like this. Even if we discount the inevitable sea level rise as a result of climate change, there are serious issues with the way we’ve been developing our cities that worsen the results of natural disasters.
Florida wouldn’t have been my first choice of place to live for a number of reasons, but for the time being, I have too many things tying me here to leave (friends, family, work, school). But on the other hand, if things like this are going to become a more frequent occurrence, it’s going to become more impractical to do so.
It is worth noting that one of FEMA’s nightmare scenarios is a direct hit to the Tampa Bay area by a Category Five hurricane. It would be impossible to evacuate the area, because too many people live there, and the damage would be catastrophic. Indeed, there were three simulations the DHS and FEMA would run as worst-case scenarios for hurricanes, with the other two being similar hits to New York City and New Orleans. The latter is now no longer a simulation, because Katrina provided a data set. As far as NYC goes, Sandy was bad, but the scenario DHS/FEMA were running was more along the lines of Harvey, a slow-moving, dense, large, wind and rain-intensive storm. If that kind of storm hit either the five boroughs dead on, or the Bay Area dead on, it would be virtually impossible to evacuate those areas. Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater, and the rest of the areas in Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco Counties simply have too many fucking people in them to evacuate cleanly.
(The other worst-case scenario was a 1906-level earthquake in LA or SF, for the curious. More info here.)

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
The power is flickering occasionally, but we still have it. The wind and rain are noisy, but not a significant threat to our house. This is a really slow-moving storm. It made landfall at Naples a few hours ago and still hasn't passed Fort Myers, if my understanding is correct. It'll probably weaken to a Category 1 or weak Category 2 by the time it passes us, which is still bad enough to do some pretty major damage, but nowhere near the kind of worst-case scenario I outlined above.
I'm mostly just chilling out right now, listening to the Grateful Dead's Get Shown the Light box (which is spectacular) and re-reading China Miéville's The City & the City in advance of next year's BBC adaptation. Things will probably return to relatively normal in a couple of days, at least for the time being. I don't know if I can deal with this kind of thing on a repeated basis, though.

Hey man, just wanted to drop in and say thanks for the updates. Myself and a grip of other folk were concerned, what with you living in Florida and all that, and it's good ta see you're doing well, given the circumstances. Stay safe.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
Yeah...I didn't realize you were in Hiaasen country.
My wife did time at U Miami before fleeing west.
From what I've seen, Irma is blowing herself out inland. The eyewall fell apart just out of Ft. Myers and the wind speeds started dropping fairly fast.
I wonder if Jose will smack the east coast.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
Irma's coming for a visit now. Obviously nothing like it was in Florida but they've pretty much shut the whole state of Georgia down. I've never seen anything like it. Water, bread, batteries, candles, and flashlights were all sold out yesterday. They're predicting widespread power outages, we had a really wet spring and early summer and that'll make the trees easier to blow down.
The eye is still over north Florida but we're getting lots of rain already. What a huge storm.
