Default Re: ChuckF, Esq. Officiates the Shit out of this Wedding (with help from Angakuk)

Mrs. S and I renewed our vows nearly 10 years ago, after 33 1/3 years. (Our granddaughter was at the perfect flower-girl age, desperately wanted to be a flower-girl--to the point where she was calling her aunt and uncles to see if they were about to get married, so that she could be their flower girl--and her aunt and uncles were not cooperating. So Mrs. S and I rented the amphitheatre in the local park and invited all of our friends and relatives.) We asked them to wear Renaissance garb. The officiant (pictured below) did a dead-on impression of the cleric from "Princess Bride," and opened the ceremony with the first several lines from the movie. We cribbed the rest of our ceremony from the wedding of a couple of friends. (I have no clue whether they wrote it themselves, but they cheerfully provided it to us for the occasion.) It included vows of support from our friends and family. The marriage vows themselves read:

Quote:
I promise
to be your life partner in our journey together,
to use my strength to help us follow the right paths,
to support you, and to turn to you for support,
to take care of you, and to take care of myself,
to be your humble student and your generous teacher,
to listen to you and to talk to you,
to trust you and to forgive you,
to have faith in you and in myself,
to be open to growth and change,
to share laughter and tears,
and to love you forever.

I make these vows to you, to bring us both joy.

The short short version,
"Do you?"
"Yes"
"Do you?"
"Yes"
"Good, You're married, Kiss her."

My sister's wedding is my second favorite I've ever attended. (It's not a long list, but still.) It wasn't much religious. The officiant was a friend of both the groom and my sister. He was high and verklempft so he pretty much said a few words and tried not to cry like an babby while he was up there. So, uh, I dunno. Whatever you figure out make sure to practice it a lot so you don't make everborty blubber because you get overcome.

Quote:
Look, how my ring encompasseth thy finger,
Even so thy breast encloseth my poor heart;
Wear both of them, for both of them are thine.
But if you or your friends aren't into Shakespeare, or including the words of literature's greatest villain in their wedding, ignore the idea.
That reminds me of my idea for some great but implicitly subversive wedding music. One of the best romantic duets ever written in opera comes at the end of Claudio Monteverdi's L'incorinazione di Poppea (The Coronation of Poppea) and is sung after the wedding by Nerone (Nero) and Poppea.

The libretto goes like this (translated from the Italian, of course):

Quote:
I gaze on you.
I delight in you.
I hold you.
I bind you to me.
No more pain.
No more death.
O my life, O my treasure.
I am yours...
You are mine...
My hope, say it, say
You are mine, my hope
My idol, say it, say
You are mine.
Yes, my love,
Yes, my heart, my life, yes.
I gaze on you.
I delight in you.
I hold you.
I bind you to me.
No more pain.
No more death.
O my life, O my treasure.
However, the previous three acts of the opera have shown Nerone and Poppea achieving this marriage and coronation by racking up a body count that wouldn't be equaled by a romantic couple until Oliver Stone made Natural Born Killers. However, the music is lovely and the sentiment expressed by the libretto at that point reveals nothing of the death and destruction both the leading characters have caused to anyone who got in their way.

The singers here are Eric Tappy (Nerone) and Rachel Yakar (Poppea). The role of Nerone was originally written for a castrato, so in modern performances they have both women and men playing the role. Sometimes castrato roles are (as here) transposed down for baritones, sometimes male countertenors perform it, and sometimes mezzo-sopranos. I like this staging (dir. Jean-Pierre Ponelle) because Nerone is holding Poppea and singing to her, and Poppea is holding her coronation crown and singing to it. :giggle:

There's an equally lovely duet at the end of the first act of Guiseppe Verdi's Otello, "Gia nella notte densa". It's based on Shakespeare's Othello, so everyone knows how that relationship goes in the end. The singers here are Jon Vickers as Otello and Victoria de los Angeles as Desdemona.

Be sure to ask the bride and groom whether they remembered to fuck first.
