Look at the double speak, straight out of Orwell.

Conforming to standard scientific methods of providing the data is not needed because the paper was reviewed without the data. Absurd.

But the Roman system has no zero, so how are you going to divide or multiply by zero?

Oh!

The babylonian number system is interesting... It makes perfect sense when you remember they were likely using it for counting on clay tablets, where you can easily wipe out and rewrite something. It's something like our still-used jot system (you know, [s]IIII[/s] [s]IIII[/s] III), in groups of ten or six, with each group as a digit, not a sum.

You can see how easy it was to write on the fly. You can fudge an 8 into a 9 with two strokes, from 9 to 10 in one swipe and one stroke, etc.

This is just about as cool as it gets.

Astronomers have created a mega-telescope by linking multiple earth-based radio arrays. They're planning to point it at the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy (about 26,000 light years from here) during the first half of April.

Oh yes, so I found this image:

(Holy cook.)

Which led me to this: Pressure Cooker at xkcd what-if
Quote:
What's the worst thing that can happen if you misuse a pressure cooker in an ordinary kitchen?
He goes way beyond "ordinary kitchen" though. Unless yours has fluorine available.

Quote:
Fill the cooker with oxygen up to 5 PSI, then pump in fluorine until it starts escaping through the safety valve. Put the vessel over an open flame until it reaches 700°C (That’s °C, not °F. Yes, this will probably set off the smoke alarm.) Now, pump the hot gas over a liquid-oxygen-cooled stainless steel surface.

The procedure here is a little tricky, but if you do things right, the gas will condense into dioxygen difluoride (O2F2).
Which led me to this: Things I Won’t Work With: Dioxygen Difluoride | In the Pipeline

Also amusingly known as FOOF, from its molecular arrangement and its properties.

This handy substance will cause ice to spontaneously combust. (You can't get it warm enough to test it on water.)

Quote:
“Being a high energy oxidizer, dioxygen difluoride reacted vigorously with organic compounds, even at temperatures close to its melting point. It reacted instantaneously with solid ethyl alcohol, producing a blue flame and an explosion. When a drop of liquid 02F2 was added to liquid methane, cooled at 90°K., a white flame was produced instantaneously, which turned green upon further burning. When 0.2 (mL) of liquid 02F2 was added to 0.5 (mL) of liquid CH4 at 90°K., a violent explosion occurred.”
Quote:
And he’s just getting warmed up, if that’s the right phrase to use for something that detonates things at -180C (that’s -300 Fahrenheit, if you only have a kitchen thermometer). The great majority of Streng’s reactions have surely never been run again. The paper goes on to react FOOF with everything else you wouldn’t react it with: ammonia (“vigorous”, this at 100K), water ice (explosion, natch), chlorine (“violent explosion”, so he added it more slowly the second time), red phosphorus (not good), bromine fluoride, chlorine trifluoride (say what?), perchloryl fluoride (!), tetrafluorohydrazine (how on Earth. . .), and on, and on. If the paper weren’t laid out in complete grammatical sentences and published in JACS, you’d swear it was the work of a violent lunatic. I ran out of vulgar expletives after the second page. A. G. Streng, folks, absolutely takes the corrosive exploding cake, and I have to tip my asbestos-lined titanium hat to him.
We should get some FOOF to play with at :ff:. :foof:

Mystery Undersea Mushroom Actually a Siphonophore

Way back in 1986, undersea biologists found a weird undersea mushroom-shaped thing which didn't appear related to modern biology, but harkened to Ediacaran life - that's way, way back, when modern traits like "symmetry" hadn't quite sorted themselves out yet. One of the most baffling creatures from that era are the triloboza - that is, a flat plate animal / creature / things with hints of a branching something inside.

They sat on this discovery for 30 years because they couldn't find more samples and so couldn't rigorously demonstrate anything about it. Eventually, with vast reluctance, they published what little they could discern without modern DNA analysis (the samples, preserved in formalin, didn't contain DNA any more.) They took some flak for it, but it was a good idea to do so and show people what they're looking for, as 2 years ago they were found in abundance. And subjected to modern DNA analysis.

They're related to a modern animal they hadn't expected - the siphonophores! Which I'm afraid doesn't tell me much, being they're colonial animals with a huge diversity of forms from jellyfish-like to salp-like, but likely means these are pieces of an animal and not the whole.

So it's not a whole new kind of ancestral animal, but I find it particularly exciting how it sheds light on what these bafflingly unidentifiable "trilobozoans" might have been - as complete animals they're totally alien, but could they be torn-off pieces of some really, really basal hydrozoan? Wouldn't be the first time we've mistaken a piece of an animal fossil for the whole. Who knows. Hoping TLR has something to say on this :)
