I had this crazy idea that since I knew I was going to stand out at Basic anyway, so I figured why not show up in a kilt?
Fortunately, a rare attack of reality hit me, and I didn't.
I don't have a family tartan, I'm afraid, like most Irish families, we go by county instead. Catch is I'm not sure if technically I would wear the Dublin or Kerry patterns. I've not been too pushed about it, as any particularly important ceremony, I'll likely be in Dress Blues anyway.
Knew a chap in a Highlander regiment, he had an NCO detailed to ensure that all the soldiers were 'regimentally attired' under their kilts.

Not to worry, CT. Those "family tartans" that those bleedin' Scots go on and on about? They're just part and parcel of the fabrications of Romanticists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Scots didn't wear "family tartans" at all...they wore the ones they thought attractive, regardless of the pattern. All that "family tartan" nonsense is modern invention.
