Default This Old House of Ours

We close on our house today, we aren't supposed to move in until the end of November, but I should get a key today.

I figure that I will use this thread to talk about any house projects that we have or similar stuff.

Also check out my pandemic beard, that thing is getting serious.

Congratulations!

Why the future move-in date? Are you giving yourself some time to fix up the house before moving in?

The sellers are renting the house back from us until they are ready to move to their new place. The house is move-in ready, nothing to do to fix it up except to move our shit in and decorate. It's going to be dope!

Like ES said, the house is move in ready, and the sellers wanted the time.

We have to break out lease, and would prefer to not leave our landlords hanging too badly. this way they get a couple of months notice. We told them last week.

apparently rent-backs are pretty common in hot real estate markets and the Bay area.

Bey's post implied it was a rent-back situation, but I was nosy. Also, as a homeowner with a lot of furniture and stuff collected over the years, trust me when I say that it's a lot easier to paint/redecorate/fix things up when the house is mostly empty.

:news:

We took possession of the house a couple of days before Thanksgiving. The movers are coming on Sunday, but in the meantime we've been moving little stuff over in the car and sleeping there on an airbed. My walk to work is officially half as long. Yay!

We put up the Christmas lights first thing because our priorities are way out of order because it was a good incentive to move the basement stuff first.

lights.jpeg

You can see the city buildings from our backyard.

city.jpeg

You can also see the freeway and the light rail station from our side yard, but only because part of the fence has been torn down.

virginia.jpeg

Oh how we love living in the city!

However, the people who flipped/maintained the house before us were literally psycho. Half of the light switches and water taps are installed backwards, and there's literally a door latch that is backwards (as in you have to turn the knob in order to close it, but you can push it open without touching the knob). Also most of the doors are too big for their frames, so you really need to put your shoulder into it to open and/or close them.

It's fucking infuriating exciting.

EDIT: bey! I told you not to install the Christmas lights upside-down! :shakefist:

When you get done with the brazillion other tasks, I recommend pulling every light fixture that might have been DIY'd by the psychos, and checking how the wiring was connected. There should be a little plastic box that houses the connected wires. If there isn't, have an electrician redo the connection(s). Psycho DIY'ers will do shit like splice bare wires together and let them just dangle against the drywall. You might guess why I know this!

If you smell a plastic or electrical burning odor, you might want to move the electrician up on the priority list.

:dawg:Will you settle for a boring update?

Our friend Steph is helping me get ready for the move/pre-move.

All Lego has either been separated by set and put in a large box, packed away (awaiting ES rebuild), or transported to the new home.

No major catastrophe befell any Lego set!!!

We have a lot of stuff packed already. The movers come Sunday, but we have the house through the end of the year.

I think we will be ready for them to spare which is good because the :dawg: :dawg: play :elephant: in the SEC championship on Saturday.

We still have some small odds and ends at the old house and we have to clean it up, but it’s good to have furniture.

The house is old and has some quirks, but we love it.

The other night we were doing our advent calendars and a train sat on the tracks behind our house for 10-15 minutes, it was really cool.

We also see and hear the planes heading to Mineta airport.

I just love living in this city.

I reiterate my anticipation of stories.

Does it have an attic? a cellar?

Or at least strange angles in the walls or rooms that aren't quite the size they ought to be?

So the garage is too small for our cars. I think when they built the two rooms, they made the garage about a foot too short.

I’m okay with street parking and covering Chandra.

Lots of switches are upside down, and there are many light switches that we haven’t figured out what they do yet.

We do have a large basement which is rare for California houses (I intend to put a grow room down there).

You enter the cellar from the backyard which is also where the entrance to the laundry room is located.

Our master closet used to be a bathroom based on the tile, light fixtures, and window that opens to the laundry room. The master bath used to be a porch or nothing based on the step down and the fact that the closet used to be a bathroom.

Two of the doors in the garage/Lego room don’t close very well because the door is just a little too big.

We have three baths and two of the showers just don’t get that hot which is weird as the water does get hot.

There are places where they replaced sections of the hardwood laminate and didn’t color match very well.

When they painted the inside they didn’t do a very good job of taping up fixtures.

That’s all that comes to mind.

The ceilings are tall, just under 9 feet and most of the door frames and window frames have cool decorative molding.

I love our home. If not for it’s flaws we would not have been able to get it. As expensive as it is, for here it’s literally the median home price and far larger than most houses in the area. Realistically, if it had cost more, we wouldn’t have been able to afford it.

The house we rented for 7 years would have cost just as much if not more (if they wanted to sell it) and it needed major remodeling.

Now our Xmas lights are complete. The three wise Persons on the left of the candy cane path and the Willow Glen small yard Xmas tree on the right.

This picture didn’t come out great, but I strung a string of Govee led lights and set them to Christmas.

The upside down switches should be a fairly easy fix if you want to. You could probably get it all done in a couple hours. Or, like Sack says, get an electrician in fairly soon. If they're sloppy like that, they could be sloppy in other ways too.

And try the mystery switches in combination with other switches nearby. We have one light in the front room that only turns on when you flip two different switches on the other side of the room.

Probably just need new mixing valves. If there's panel access to the shower fixtures (i.e. you don't have to bust through a wall to get to them) this wouldn't be a huge job. If just 1 I would say maybe go for it yourself, but if you have 2 just have a plumber do it while you're paying for one service call.

We accidentally discovered how to turn on the motion-detector lights in the back yard, which was a big concern for me for security reasons, so I was super happy about that.

It was very similar to that scene in Christmas Vacation, as I was out in the yard going "They're on! They're on! Come out and see!" and then bey flicked the switch on his way out and they went off, and I was like, "no I swear they were on! It was glorious!"

So the trick is, it is on the same switch as a ceiling light in the garage. So if we want the security light to be enabled, we need to leave an interior garage light on at all times?

I really want there to be some horribly suggestive patches of discolouration in the cellar, which seem to grow. With a nameless fœtor.

Also, if there are areas that look as if they might have been more recently bricked up, please check if you can smell amontillado.

:envy: I've "owned" 4 houses in my life, and none of them had a basement. I've always wanted one, but like you said, rare in CA (and in flood-prone areas of TX, such as where we were).

We have three baths and two of the showers just don’t get that hot which is weird as the water does get hot.
What Chack said - plus I'd bet a dollar to a donut that you have the original galvanized pipes. It's actually worth it to hire someone to replace them all with copper, although the $4-6K does hurt (it pays to shop around when you're ready; a lot of assholes out there will charge more like $8-20K). Some of our pipes were so full of corrosion, minerals, etc., that the actual diameter the water had to go through was around half an inch, and less than a quarter in a few places.
