Wasn't that fun? Are you still with me?

I’m still here, but I’m protesting. I beat their claim, but there was still no entry for Robertson Davies, nor a title by Kurt Vonnegut, yet Joseph Heller is there, and Shakespeare gets dual pointage if you’ve read the complete works, as Hamlet gets counted twice. I call “elitist FOWL!”

Here is part two!

You have received this note because someone thinks you are a literary geek. Copy the questions into your own note, answer the questions, and tag any friends who would appreciate the quiz, including the person who sent you this. Don't bother trying to italicize your book titles. We know you want to.

I went with bold, myself.

1. What author do you own the most books by? Robertson Davies.

2. What book do you own the most copies of? Doubles of a few, mostly Shakespearean plays.

3. Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions?. No.

4. What fictional character are you secretly in love with? None known...wait, do Samantha Spade and Elena Delgado count? That's video, but they are still fictional characters. But I think it's the actresses who play those characters to which I'm attracted, not the characters.

5. What book have you read the most times in your life (excluding picture books read to children; i.e., Goodnight Moon does not count)? Um…this is a trick question, right? For most people this is going to be ‘the Bible’ or Shakespeare. Having been a community theater actor doing outdoor theater, I must have read the six plays in which I was cast innumerable times.

6. What was your favorite book when you were ten years old? Sorry…I don’t remember any.

7. What is the worst book you've read in the past year? Whatever it was, it was forgettable.

8.What is the best book you've read in the past year? Nothing stands out in the past year.

9.If you could force everyone you tagged to read one book, what would it be? The Corporation.

10. What book would you most like to see made into a movie? The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula LeGuin.

11.What book would you least like to see made into a movie? The Manticore, by Robertson Davies.

12. Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character. Sorry, I rarely remember dreams and when I do, they NEVER involve writers, books or literary characters.

13.What is the most lowbrow book you've read as an adult? You tell me what qualifies for ‘lowbrow’ and I might be able to peg that for you…otherwise, sorry.

14.What is the most difficult book you've ever read? That’s easy…anything by James Joyce.

15. What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you've seen? Cymbaline….I was an actor in it.

16. Do you prefer the French or the Russians? No preference…I tend to dislike both, but some French can do scathing satire, which I prefer over the 'downer' tales of the Russkies.

17. Roth or Updike?. Never read either, and don’t particularly care.

18.David Sedaris or Dave Eggers? I’ve never heard of either, and don’t particularly care.

19. Shakespeare, Milton, or Chaucer? Any is fine.

20. Austen or Eliot? Never read either, and don’t particularly care.

21.What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading? No W.B.Yeats.

22.What is your favorite novel? The Fifth Business, by Robertson Davies.

23. Play? The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, by Peter Weiss.

24. Poem? ‘Earth Household’, by Gary Snyder.

25.Essay? Anything by Nicholas von Hoffman. I like splenetic.

26.Work of nonfiction? Too many to name them all, but the works of Kevin Phillips, Chalmers Johnson, Matthew Carr, and John Perkins’ Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, along with The Corporation, The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, by Joel Bakan, rate very high. The latter is actually a book written during the making of the documentary film The Corporation.

27.Who is your favorite writer? Kevin Phillips, and in fiction, Robertson Davies.

28.Who is the most overrated writer alive today? Thomas Pynchon? Or, is James Joyce still on the docket for all the travesties he foisted on us?

29.What is your desert island book? Huh? Let me look….There must be a big photo book of human female nudes somewhere….

30.And... what are you reading right now? Failed States, my first book by Noam Chomsky.

Not very well read, but I knew that. I have read a lot of Dickens and a little Shakespeare that do not appear on the list.

God you're all stupid nerds. The other questions suck, however, I'd like to add one thing: I swear I was already reading it before I saw Chuck's post, but my current novel is in fact The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov.

I protest as well, especially getting double credit for Narnia/LW&W but not the entire Divine Comedy, and I say I get a score of INFINITY PLUS ONE for reading all of Proust's In Search of Lost Time (Remembrance of Things Past). Read it in the same freaking semester as Ulysses, which explains why I am completely insane.

1. What author do you own the most books by? Probably Roger Zelazny.

2. What book do you own the most copies of? The Bible, due to gifts and thefts from hotel rooms.

3. Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions? Don't get me started on that. I have a peeve about that stupid peeve. A meta-peeve, if you will.

4. What fictional character are you secretly in love with? If I told you it wouldn't be a secret, dumbass.

5. What book have you read the most times in your life (excluding picture books read to children; i.e., Goodnight Moon does not count)? I honestly don't know for certain, but possibly Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber.

6. What was your favorite book when you were ten years old? I think it was Fantastic Voyage.

7. What is the worst book you've read in the past year? I posted about it. That Vonnegut book I suspect he didn't really write, at least not while awake.

8.What is the best book you've read in the past year? To be honest I haven't read much in the past year, so probably the latest Donaldson book, which was good but not great.

9.If you could force everyone you tagged to read one book, what would it be? I, Claudius and/or Claudius The God.

10. What book would you most like to see made into a movie? A Night in the Lonesome October, by Zelazny.

11.What book would you least like to see made into a movie? Any of Donaldson's Covenant books, because they'd just fuck them all up. Horribly.

12. Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character. Don't remember one. I'll make up one later and pretend I really dreamed it.

13.What is the most lowbrow book you've read as an adult? Do comics count? In which case, Garth Ennis' hilariously gross crap. Or perhaps my book of the complete Howard The Duck 70s comics.

14.What is the most difficult book you've ever read? Ulysses was slowest going on a time-per-page basis, but I found Proust (with his longwinded parentheses full of both extended metaphors and unfamiliar place-names, forging ahead like a runaway train through uncharted territory while it makes its own winding, confusing track, sometimes spiraling around d'Absurde Hill, the Beulleshitte Valley, or the noble Chateau d'Pretensionne several times and then crossing back over itself, other times seeming to jump ahead without the connecting bits of track being noticeable behind the passengers, who invariably would wonder -- if they really existed, which they do not -- how the train got to the strange locale they find themselves in, yet not particularly care as the fog of uncertainty makes the surroundings barely detectable at best, and thoroughly uninteresting, until they can hardly stand to wait until they reach their destination, and when they finally do, cannot remember why they left in the first place, much as you will not remember what this sentence was about before this parenthetical aside began and will have to go back to the beginning to remind yourself; I had to do that myself to finish writing it) to be, overall, the most difficult to get through.

15. What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you've seen? The Two Gentlemen of Verona, unless you count the parody of Pericles, Prince of Tyre I saw once.

16. Do you prefer the French or the Russians? Like godfry, I'm not fond of either, but there are some French novels I sort of liked even though I wouldn't reread them, which is more than I can say for Russian ones.

17. Roth or Updike? Neither.

18.David Sedaris or Dave Eggers? Heard of them, haven't read either.

19. Shakespeare, Milton, or Chaucer? All have their place, but I've read way too damned much of all of them. Paradise Lost is brilliant, but Milton deserved to go blind for those turgid essays of his. I still love a lot of Shakespeare, and while I'm too lazy to slog through Chaucer anymore, I had a professor in college who convinced me it was beautiful stuff.

20. Austen or Eliot? Not terribly fond of either.

21.What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading? Not nearly enough history. I especially regret not having read more Gibbon or Durant.

22.What is your favorite novel? Tough to say. I tend to revise my opinion too often.

23. Play? I haven't been to many good plays other than Shaxpur productions. So I'll pick Medea The Musical just because it was damned funny.

24. Poem? You're gonna think I'm kidding, but probably Ginsberg's Howl. Actually, I'm gonna count Roy Harper's "The Lord's Prayer," which is more spoken-word than musical. One of those.

25.Essay? I don't really have a favorite that stands out. Lately I've been digging Leonard Pitts' columns, but I don't know if those count. As for classic essays, per above, anything but Milton. I sort of like Montaigne.

26.Work of nonfiction? Will Durant's first volume, Our Oriental Heritage. I wish I had the patience to read the rest of them. Yes, I know there are some inaccuracies. It's still fascinating and achingly well-written.

27.Who is your favorite writer? I'll just cop out and say Roger Zelazny, although I've probably finally moved on.

28.Who is the most overrated writer alive today? It's not fair to pick on writers I haven't actually read; the most overrated writers are ones I wouldn't be caught dead reading. Like, say, what's-his-DaVinci-Code-face.

29.What is your desert island book? Ah yes, the pick one book question. I'd probably pick Shakespeare's complete plays, not because I'm so highbrow or anything, but just because it would give me a really huge book to read full of a lot of stories that are very different from each other, and all well-written.

30.And... what are you reading right now? I haven't started a new one yet. Maybe next time I go, I can have 10 damned minutes at the library to find a book without Li'l Puppet dragging me back to the kids' section.

Seriously, The Five People You Meet in Heaven?

19 for me, although there were a couple that I might have counted except I didn't finish them.

I was wondering the same thing and trying to figure out the pattern. Especially since I had like 7 books in the first group, and zero in a couple others. I figured the first group is the most popular books? Maybe they're in the order of best sellers or something.

Yeah I just couldn't come up with any organization scheme that would have Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in between Hamlet and Les Misérables.

i will note that as a kid I had a notebook of those "Reccommended College Reading Lists" which I would keep taped up next to my nightstand until the whole thing was highlighted. So I have read a LOT of classics. I think this is a great list because it has quite a few more recent works, (which I always mean to read but never do unless a friend gives me one.)

I'm going to print this out and try to finish this list. Haven't done that in forever. Thanks for posting!

Quote:

1. What author do you own the most books by? Ray Bradbury

2. What book do you own the most copies of? Le Petit Prince by Antoine de St Exupery Three in French, one in English. I bought one in France, my professor gave me one, my brother got me one in France, and I bought the last for Mr. Monde to read to his art students.

3. Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions? A little bit, yes.

4. What fictional character are you secretly in love with? Ummm, Hannibal Lector. I'm dark I knows it.

5. What book have you read the most times in your life (excluding picture books read to children; i.e., Goodnight Moon does not count)? Probably Little Women, as I read it every Christmas.

6. What was your favorite book when you were ten years old? The Jungle Books

7. What is the worst book you've read in the past year? I don't read bad books.

8.What is the best book you've read in the past year? The Sound and The Fury by Faulkner brilliant!

9.If you could force everyone you tagged to read one book, what would it be? There isn't a single book for everyone. Different people need different books at different times.

10. What book would you most like to see made into a movie? I typically don't. We could use a more recent Picture of Dorian Grey. Cast Johnny Depp and I'll be there with bells on.

11.What book would you least like to see made into a movie? Most of them.

12. Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character. Too personal.

13.What is the most lowbrow book you've read as an adult? DuhVinci Code

14.What is the most difficult book you've ever read? Anna Karenina took me forever, because I tried to read it too young. I've always meant to read it again.

15. What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you've seen? I haven't really seen any I would describe as obscure. I've mostly only gotten to see the popular ones. I did go to a reading of Venus and Adonis once which was great. But that's not really a play.

16. Do you prefer the French or the Russians? French have my heart, Russians have my head.

17. Roth or Updike? Updike, despite the fact that he doesn't write women well. No! Maybe because he doesn't write women well!

18.David Sedaris or Dave Eggers? I like my eggers over easy.

19. Shakespeare, Milton, or Chaucer? Shakespeare

20. Austen or Eliot? Those two do not belong in the same category if they mean T.S. Eliot. Austen if it is raining, Eliot if I have had a drink.

21.What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading? The Bible. I really have never desired to read it, but it is something I should because it relates so much to culture. In my Crusades class, everyone was pulling out these biblical references and I was at a complete loss.

22.What is your favorite novel? I can't have favorites!

23. Play? I will limit this to those that I have seen rather than read. Hamlet by far.

24. Poem? Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock, beautiful, comic, tragic, the whole of human experience in a single package.

25.Essay? The Literary Offences of James Cooper, by Mark Twain

26.Work of nonfiction? God I hate favorite q's Um, Jane Powell's series on Bungallows was very well written, tons of great information, humor, and spirit.

27.Who is your favorite writer? Ray Bradbury is my emotional grandfather.

28.Who is the most overrated writer alive today? Dan Brown

29.What is your desert island book? A dictionary.

30.And... what are you reading right now? Anthony Trollope's Palliser Novels.

You also get credit for both The Chronicles of Narnia as a set and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe individually, so there are two examples of double dipping. Not that I mind, it seems unfair that you only get credit for full sets on some of these.

Oh...I quite agree. I presume my comment about Ulysses was noted.

I had a Lit major friend who described Joyce as the "source of shit that supplies the flies of literature known as Lit graduate students....it's so impenetrable it supports the pretensions of massive numbers of clueless blowhards."

Even though I could finish neither Ulysses nor Portrait..., I agreed.

But this....this...

This explains much.

Sock, you have my most heartfelt sympathies. I hope you are getting therapy. You are obviously getting on with your life, which is good. I had the great misfortune of having had a lover who was reading Proust, in French, for her French class. That is, until the good professor was tried and convicted of bombing a recruiting station. She, the Proust reader, is evidently now a Presbyterian divine....

But Proust is not English literature. Which has its own sins to answer for, not Proust. I'm looking at Joyce here.

I guess that's pretty much. I used to read a lot, but I've forgotten how lately. And I probably couldn't remember shit about half of the ones I read.

1. What author do you own the most books by?

Balzac, but that's just because my brother gave me a complete set of Balzac, and it's huge. I've read very little of it.

2. What book do you own the most copies of?

The Communist Manifesto. I started giving them away as door prizes to unsuspecting visitors a while back, but I think I still have maybe five or six.

3. Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions?.

No, because I am not a dumbass. Or at least not that kind of dumbass.

4. What fictional character are you secretly in love with?

What's that guy from American Psycho? I'm going to pretend that's my answer.

5. What book have you read the most times in your life (excluding picture books read to children; i.e., Goodnight Moon does not count)?

Either Confederacy of Dunces or Knut Hamsun's Hunger.

6. What was your favorite book when you were ten years old?

Ten was a funny age for me. It might have been a book about Jack the Ripper.

7. What is the worst book you've read in the past year?

I haven't been reading much for the past few years. Probably some Chuck Pahlanuik (sp?) book or something.

8.What is the best book you've read in the past year?

lol I think I've reread Hunger this year, so that.

9.If you could force everyone you tagged to read one book, what would it be?

I can't pick. Maybe One Hundred Years of Solitude.

10. What book would you most like to see made into a movie?

The Bible! The whole thing, and it has to be totally faithful to the book!

11.What book would you least like to see made into a movie?

I don't care, really, but maybe some Dan Brown book or something. They put too many commercials for those around.

12. Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character.

I don't know. Is your mom a writer, book, or literary character?

13.What is the most lowbrow book you've read as an adult?

Can't pick. Maybe James Watts' wife's autobiography, WHICH I READ TWICE. Maybe "The New Adventures of the Secretaries" or that novelization of an episode of Welcome Back Kotter (Sweathog Newshounds, I think it was called), or maybe that 70s era biography of Henry Winkler.

14.What is the most difficult book you've ever read?

Define difficult.

In a way maybe The Satanic Verses, because I could tell stuff was going over my head because I don't know the Koran well. Maybe Life: A User's Manual because I was trying to keep track of the conventions, or maybe House of Leaves because it was logistically difficult with the footnotes and whatnot.

Infinite Jest was hard to keep track of sometimes, too, but I don't think I ever quite finished it. I got close at least.

Oh! And also Gravity's Rainbow.

READING IS HARD.

15. What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you've seen?

I don't know. I've had season tickets to Shakespeare festivals a couple of different years, but I don't know what would be the most obscure.

16. Do you prefer the French or the Russians?

The Russians, but I'm sort of embarrassed about that for some reason.

21.What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading?

I guess that I can't really finish Ulysses, now that I'm all thinking about that. I like it, even. It just needs more car chases or something, I guess.

Oops. I misspoke. I think I conflated this guy's Dan Brown reviews with this guy's page by page reviews of the Left Behind books. (The Left Behind ones are really hard to navigate, because they're sorted last to first. Worth it, though!)

I have read 23 of those books. Most of them don't even interest me, I don't care if they're great literature.

1. What author do you own the most books by?

I have the entire collections of Edgar Allan Poe and Lewis Carroll, and we have several entire series including fantasy and detective novels. So I don't know.

2. What book do you own the most copies of?

The Bible.

3. Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions?.

No.

4. What fictional character are you secretly in love with?

Not telling

5. What book have you read the most times in your life (excluding picture books read to children; i.e., Goodnight Moon does not count)?

Through the Looking Glass, it was a favorite as a child and I still read it periodically as an adult. I do tend to reread books and even series kinda frequently.

There are many on the list that I started and did not finish (and did not count), and one (the bible) that I have not read front to back. There are others on the list that are in the "to read" pile.

Don't have time at the moment to look at part 2.

Going over the list, I found one I'd missed that I'd read (Madame Bovary!)
