Default One of our space stations is leaking!

International Space Station crew repair leak in Russian craft | Science | The Guardian

Nothing to see here, move along. They discovered a 2mm "rip" in the wall of the capsule that was "letting oxygen leak into space" (I suppose that's a bad thing).

Astronaut Alexander Gerst put his finger over the hole to plug the leak, until it could be sealed up ... with tape.

I am disappointed that he's German not Dutch. So close.

I found it fascinating that the leak was detected when they were asleep and ground crews decided it was so minor they wouldn't bother to wake them. It makes me wonder just how leaky could a space station get and still function reasonably well as long as there were adequate reserves of gas.

The real question though is not how much air got out, but what type of alien spore got in with them!

Duct tape. It was totally duct tape.

Well of course it was.

I'm sure they also have some WD-40 up there.

Dmitry Rogozin, head of the Russian state space agency Roscosmos, said: “Overnight and in the morning there was an abnormal situation – a pressure drop, an oxygen leak at the station.”

He added: “A micro-fracture was found, most likely it is damage from the outside. The design engineers believe it is the result of a micrometeorite.”
It's funny, the article I read before had an interview with the physicist, former astronaut and professor of aerospace engineering Ulrich Walter who said it was most likely a manufacturing error by the Russians.

But wait ...

Space station air leak: someone drilled the hole, say Russians | Science | The Guardian

Quote:
“What is this: a production defect or some premeditated actions?” he asked. “We are checking the Earth version. But there is another version that we do not rule out: deliberate interference in space.”
I'm going with manufacturing error, although this is not totally implausible:
Quote:
A Russian MP who is a former cosmonaut suggested that a psychologically disturbed astronaut could have done it to force an early return home. “We’re all human and anyone might want to go home, but this method is really low,” said Maxim Surayev, who is from President Vladimir Putin’s ruling party.
