According to the news story the man and his son were visiting a friend. The friend was not expecting company and his gun was not secured. So this is, at least in some small part, about poor gun storage, but the friend may have had a loaded gun out in the open for some very good reason. Perhaps he was getting ready to take a picture of himself with the barrel of the gun in his mouth. Or, perhaps he was getting ready to commit suicide. In any case, there are any number of perfectly reasonable explanations for why he had a loaded gun lying about unsecured where any passing 4 year old might pick it up and fire it.

Right ... he was in his residence and wasn't expecting company, and he keeps his gun for self-defense. That would mean keeping it loaded and accessible--that's the way self-defense works. You don't wait until you expect to be attacked to prepare. And I doubt he's got any reason to be concerned about "passing 4 year olds" wandering into his house. Again, it was a surprise visit.

So, this isn't a storage issue, just a tragic and apparently rather unlikely accident.

If you live alone or with other adults there shouldn't be any problems with using a gun for self-defense (and even surprise visits are highly unlikely to create any). What many anti-gun types fail or refuse to understand is that a gun that's not ready to fire is also not ready for self-defense. It may still be effective, but it's a serious tactical compromise to put it rather mildly.

But since we have an anomalous case that appeals to anti-gun sentiment, I expect few if any participating in this thread will be willing to hear any of that.

Of course wresting the loaded gun with the safety off from the wee little hands of a four year old might be a bit of a problem too. It's a judgement call, I guess.

That's interesting how the gun had to be loaded and instantly accessible and ready to fire at an intruder, for self defense purposes, in order to to avoid serious tactical compromises.

It's also interesting and completely anomalous how the four year-old just picked it up and killed an innocent person with it. It sure would never occur to an intruder to pick up a loaded gun and use it to kill somebody in the house!

Anyway, the gun had to be there for tactical reasons, end of story.

Are you aware that in an environment where there are no children, you don't need to ensure children are accounted for?

Or do you think this guy should have somehow sensed his friend was in the area, and had his kid with him, and was dropping by unannounced?

Did you read the article before opining about it?

For the record (anticipating the nonsense that's probably up next), it's entirely possible this was a case of poor storage, but we have to presume the things that would make it so--they're not in the article.

This is a very good point. I have no children, and I do not childproof my residence.

I store my constitutionally-protected improvised explosive devices in the open. These purely defensive devices are armed and ready for use to repel intruders. Otherwise they would be practically useless (to put it mildly)!

Because of the extra security, adults and children alike feel safer when visiting my home. This is what the Framers intended.
