Default What's a good program for learning computer animation?

My friend's daughter, aged 10-ish, is a budding artist, and her mom wants to find a good starter program she can play with to learn to make animations like this:

Do you guys have any ideas?

I use Blender. It goes against most UI norms in the computer world but it is free.

I do not know any simple ones for ten year olds but will ask a few nerds when I get a chance, hopefully this evening.

I was thinking Scratch... Looks about the speed you're looking for, and it's available pretty much everywhere (IIRC, Raspbian has it installed.)

I will ask Little Miss JoeP. She's mentioned Blender, Maya, ZBrush and about 10 others, but is most definitely not 10 any more. And does 3D animation rather than 2D, and in fact she doesn't do the animation or the rigging (apparently those are different things) herself any more, other people do that and she does character art.

So back in the day before it became the bane of all web developers nightmares, Macromedia director was a multimedia creation program that merged basic programing with vector animation to create complex multimedia experiences to put on your CD Roms as was the rage at the time. It kinda fell into the roll of being the only thing integrated into web browsers and away it went to have packages stapled onto its sides and shipped out. Part of the security hell that is Flash is that at it's core a lot of the concepts it was built around were designed for CD Presentations and silly vector web graphics, no one will care about hacking that.

Adobe Animate appears to be the successor to this, using flash and vector based tools to create animated videos. There's a pretty good bet that video was made in either it or Adobe After Effects. Adobe has moved to subscription services so at $20 a month for animate I'm not sure if it's worth it or not. I'm also not quite sure how to steal it anymore. All of my early photoshops were 'stolen' copies, in one case from a graphics designer that was happy to give away their high programs to any interested kid. I would say an indepth tutorial about how to go from opening the program to making some flying text or bouncing ball video exported to the inter webs is more likely to make it worth it.

ToonBoom Harmony I know almost nothing about, looking it up it appears to be the industry standard, but also more complex and geared for more traditional animation. It does appear to have an essentials version at only $15 a month. Ugh, so many subscriptions.

Director has been discontinued--which is okay I guess because the last version was buggy.

Professionally, I use After Effects.

There are open-source alternatives to After Effects. I was goofing around with VSDC Free Video Editor but I haven't done much in it so I can't really make any recommendations.

Some Director users have been using the Godot Engine but again, I haven't done much with it.

Brain is trying to remember some other program but it's not remembering. Oh well.

Linkwoman, In my opinion, the MOST easiest software tool to start with in order to get the basics right, practice a little, and not spend huge amounts of money is to get the FREE trial for adobe animate cc. It is very simple a vast amount of resources, tutorials online.

Thanx and Warm Regards

Oh, hey! As long as this thrad has been bumpified, how about a little update?

The young lady was mildly interested in some Blender and After Effects tutorials she saw on YouTube, but her current passion is making stop-motion movies with her toys and little models and things. No idea what kind of equipment or software she's using, but the movies are adorable.

They better be. Otherwise Mr. Steve's post was cruel and mean.
